Are you applying a formula to convert a player’s ELO rating into his/her rank? In other terms, should I set manually my rank on Settings page or is it going to be updated by the system along with my rating progress?

It is going to be automatically updated.
The manual rank setting is just for people to set their starting rank and perhaps for people who take a long break and come back much stronger.
Ranks also are about 100 points wide, it’s pretty much exactly what you find on the wikipedia page:

This thread is outdated since Jul 2017 . At this point the OGS rating system changed to glicko2. All info in this thread about Elo on OGS is obsolete.
tl;dr We’re switching to a Glicko-2 rating system, which should be great for a lot of reasons. All of your past ranked games have been accounted for during this transition.
