In quick matchmaking choosing wether you want your enemies + this or - that strength is somewhat unintitive as a kyu player. A small note which means stronger and which means weaker would be an easy fix.
Also, maybe that’s just a me thing, but it always takes me a moment to figure it out
Yeah it’s a common thing, I’ve been scratching my head about it.
The question is: how to indicate it without being clunky… where are the UI designers when we need them
KGS makes it just a “max rank difference” (no option for differing + or -), it seems, but that may not let users customise as much as wanted.
Another option would just be to allow users to select lowest and highest opponent rank
(e.g. drop down as in the custom match settings : 30k, 29k, 28k, 27k… 7d, 8d, 9d+, though if we want to limit to 9 rank difference, we could calculate and automatically put that into the drop-down )
(so for a 5k, the drop down menus could display
Min.
14k
13k
12k
…
5k
Max.
5k
4k
3k
…
4d
5d
Edit : Or, just use the current system but put a greyed-out “Weaker” and “Stronger” at the tops of the drop-down lists for clarity, then use the current system of
Rank Difference :
Weaker
-9
-8
…
-1
0
Stronger
0
+1
…
+8
+9
Looking at the space for the drop-downs again, maybe a small text above or below is easier than populating the actual menu ?
(it would elongate the menu too much, probably)
Like this ?
(nice new help/info popup in the bottom right, by the way, I didn’t see it before !)
We had it like that when the new system was first added, but too many people complained and so it was changed to how it is now.
Looks nice as a popup, less clutter to make it temporarily displayed too.
Is the “Skip this topic” how it would be displayed too ? That part (topic…?) might be a bit odd
It refers to a general category of help tips, so you can dismiss them all at once rather than one at a time.
Ahh ok, it seemed a bit outside of any context/maybe bloat here, though I remember it was in some other sections of the site being tested (with a lot of help/tooltip explanation involved), are there usually other help tips on the play page ?
You can see the list of available ones under Settings->Help Settings.
If you want to remind yourself what it’s like in action, you can click “Show” on the OJE one then navigate to OGS Joseki Explorer.
(That one is the most straightforward to turn on and off, other one have some conditions about when you see them).
I’ve been pondering supporting ones that just have an (X) for dismiss, instead of “Skip this topic” and “OK”.
A “topic” is a sequence of popups - you can see that in OJE.
I like “X” idea for small ones, it’s less extra text especially here where we were trying to simplify the interface, but that 'Skip this topic" makes sense for the topics like in the Joseki Explorer too. ^^
Does it fly:
(I realised that “Skip this topic” only really applies if there are more popups following in the sequence - this is something we know, so we can not-say-that if we don’t have that).
I think something permament would be preferable, show once stuff has the tendency to clicked away, to never be read and forgotten ^^
Maybe just above the pop-out or in the pop-out so you can see it while adjusting the settings?
This looks great!
