How wrong is it to win the game by time tactically?

A few times this year, the idea of the “backgammon rule” has been raised. The “backgammon rule” is the option for a player to ask the opponent to resign; if the opponent refuses then the game will be played for double the rating points. This would be a way to discourage long and useless endgames.
