Concerns about OGS’s “competing” product aside, i think OGS is already doing what it should w.r.t openness: exposing game data in SGF format.
A dedicated button for a specific review tool sounds well-intentioned, but the tight coupling can actually decrease openness.
Imagine a new offering pops up, ReviewHero.com. The offer a solid service, on the level of AI Sensei, perhaps even better. They ask OGS “Can we get added to your game screen as well?”. Now OGS is in a tough position, because they have to decide whether this new site meets the bar for further cluttering the interface. Or down the road, if one service becomes unmaintained - OGS then has to decide when to drop the button.
This is, of course, very hypothetical, but I think it’s a good reason many tools have “Export in some open format…” rather than “Open in some alternative product…”
Unless it’s helping people cheat, fighting 3P browser extensions is probably very low on OGS’s list. Something like an AI Sensei extension would even be welcome, I imagine.
I’ve forgotten if we’ve already had this but inspired by
I suspect a popular feature that will never be implemented would be to be able to unvacation an opponent in the same way that you can unpause their pause.
Maybe an advanced version would be for this to only apply on a game-by-game basis.
Relativistic vacation: your clock doesn’t stop but just slows down. For instance if the clock functions at 50% speed for 2 days, it just costs you 1 day of vacation.
My number one feature request is for them to invent a time machine to go back in time and prevent OGS from replacing KGS and killing the community spirit that we once had.
Well I’m not so active in the main site English chat, but one can imagine it being a place to cultivate community, whether it’s kibitzing on games, or chatting about other go or non go things. There’s also off topic.
I guess there’s lots of activity that goes on other places now, twitch and YouTube chats, discord communities, forums etc.
I think all of those naturally detract from one community but form communities of their own.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing, although from the perspective of one community it could be, or appear that way.
I was never a public chatroom kind of person, so OGS forum was heavensent for me, love how unrelated things are here, and everyone’s sense of humor matches me so well. So like the transition closed the door for some people, opened the door for someone else I guess.
As a programmer the idea of an application running for 10 years without maintenance just spark in my mind thousands of dreadful thoughts. It was actually the main reason I quit KGS, not the community thing.
KGS in-game kibitz was great though, not sure why we don’t have the same atmosphere on OGS.
But to be fair in-game chatting in Go in general sucks almost everywhere, online and offline. Everyone’s so “professional” and careful always, I don’t dare making stupid joke or else it’ll be revealed that I really am an idiot.
Like c’mon I already spend 8 hours a day pretending I understand what I’m talking about, I just want to relax and shit talk when I’m off desk.
Time changes… I think especially of the twitch thing. I follow these, instead of kibbitzing. A lot of social is now there but I regret sometimes the old way. A stream is strongly limiting the study and emotions when you watch a game, because the player his here listening and that’s a huge difference.
In that sense, it could be great to have all on the same page, the stream and a collective review with a chat not accessible to the players during the game.
