Finding the biggest place in the Middle-game

Hi! I was curious how to find the biggest/best move/sequence in the Middle-game. Thanks!

My rule of thumb is:

Any time that my opponent has any kind of Large Extension on one side of the board, and is playing vertical moves into the middle on both sides - either find a place to peep at the edge and then travel to the middle, or just jump right in the middle slightly “above” where their highest stones are at that time, wait for them to respond, and extend the other direction.

It’s either that or 3 moves later I wish I’d thought of jumping in there first

That’s exactly what children aspiring to high Dan are asked in some of their training.
Middle game is something especially difficult, and shortcuts are hard to find.
