Hey folks. I recently got an account on FoxWQ since WeiqiHub makes it accessible on mobile.
Anyone else here playing on Fox? I was thinking we could carve out a section of the forums here.
Also I have a question: how have you found rank to match up? I joined with my OGS rank and it feels like an underestimate (like I won all my games as a 7k) not sure if it’s just that I’m playing more live, or opponents take more risks, or if the rank is truly wrong.
Same here. I think I’ll always have ~20 OGS correspondence games.
But a fast automatch has been a dream
Sorry I could have led with a better conversation starter. Actually yeah there are some topics that I’m interested in the intersection of OGS and Fox players.
Features which differ - can OGS learn some things from Fox? Vice versa? A couple I noticed already:
Rank system: I understand it’s like win X/Y games to rank up or down. Instead of some statistical system. Do you think this works? Or is glicko superior?
Automatch settings: there are only 5 options instead of 18. I think it’s interesting given that Fox has the much larger player pool
How is moderation working there? Seems very easy to sandbag
Noob questions: how do I do
Is there a way to link to a game like I can with OGS games? Do they have any web functionality?
This works on Fox but we are almost always paired with someone with the same rank (± 1 stone, perhaps the game is without komi in this case, I don’t remember). The Glicko is better if we want to pair people with different ranks.
I have to say, I hate how most Fox players play, this crazy greed and motivation to invade literally everywhere, or this way too ambitious moyo moves urgh… BUT I respect it very much at the same time.
They often don’t care about AI ideas and play their own stuff, they cut and ask if we can defend their cut and they try it again somewhere else, they are also really good in making sneaky late game invasions, one can feel they try everything to win. From all servers, I got the most input on Fox because of this variety of play.
It feels for me like they play their own version of Go - gamble Go. Of course, the higher you go, the games become more ‘proper’. I wonder if they feel the same the other way around if they play against me or ‘us’.
How do you guys experience the Fox way of Go?
Most westerners play weiqi on theories inherited from videos, books etc… coming from Japan. We have a theoretical weiqi. We trust it works but we have to assume it. Next these Korean players have a different approach, they will try to interfere asap, asking you to put your theories on action, and in their disrespect of them, asking you to prove they are wrong. I don’t make any judgement, it’s a way to play and it’s not always so easy to profit from a situation in which you should. That’s more real with kyu players, it tends to disappear in the dans level.
Fox kyu level is often ridiculous, they don’t know josekis and make constant overplays. The answer is to play solid, be patient and wait for the opportunity to kill 1 or 2 of their groups. I’m not claiming I’m always successful.
I play at Fox 3d on average, and games at that level feel normal.
Update: i singled upped, then doubled upped so now at 2k This one seems about right, so far.
I agree the playing style is a bit much, but I am enjoying it. It feels like a lot more of my 9x9 games have ended in one player losing everything because of this gamble-style. I also feel like there are a lot of massive blunders in my games, but now I’m wondering if it’s just because we’re playing blitz (the most popular option)
One thing i noticed: a lot of accounts are named “V266273848381” or something - a capital V followed by numbers. What’s that about?
If your opponent has incredible many games, like 12k wins and losses, probability is high that it is a bot. They also have unique playing style, including the same move order in the fuseki but its often too late to cancel once you figure it/can be really sure
If these names have a symbol infront, like an silver V, its to 100% a human.
Other than that I couldnt figure out a way to be sure what one plays against.
I don’t like playing on Fox because of the constant feeling that I’m playing with bots. It’s not like my opponents play very poor or good, but it is the way they play — it feels like they (Fox players) all play the same style. I know maybe it sounds weird, but I don’t feel personality of my opponents, I don’t see feelings in their moves. I have a constant feeling that I’m playing with robots. I don’t have this feeling when I’m playing on OGS.
