Game History Table: ranks

(Background: from time to time questions come up about what rank is shown in the Game History Table. There are various possibilities, each with credible rationale, and I can never remember what we chose, so here it is  )

  • The Game History table shows the current player’s rank before the game on that row.
  • The Game History table shows the raw rank, which is the rank you get from calculating the rating-to-rank from the player’s actual “Overall” glicko rating on the system.
    • This is not the “display rank”.
    • The “display rank” is also the "practical rank (used for matchmaking) and capped at the “bottom” at 25k. We never use or show a rank less than 25k, except in this table and in the graph above.

The reason for showing the raw rank is to help people understand how far away they are from progressing to 24k, when their rating is below the 25k value.

The reason for showing it in the Game History table as well as on the graph is lost in the fog of history, but it probably has to do with making sure people are aware, because not everyone is looking at, or knows how to read, the graph.

^^ draft, in the sense that this is my current understanding, but totally open for revision if someone knows better.

And … based on a reading of the code (not experimental evidence)…

… the rating calculation for a given game uses the current ratings of the players as at the end of the game to compute the new rating.
