Do you mean “it’s assumed in tsumego that if a ko forms then it’s assumed there’s a big enough threat”?

Huh - I never knew that, I wonder if that explains why I find some tsumego so bewildering

No, it’s just a possible solution for tsumego. If unconditional life/kill is difficult, then the next thing the player should aim for is ko. Then there are different kinds of ko and so on.

Don’t worry, it’s one of the most asked questions on Reddit, so much that it was even considered to set-up a bot response saying “it’s a ko”
