Getting a rank assigned to second account

After trying to address the (in my case uncomfortable) discrepensies in rank in different time-settings I decided to create a second account for live games only. Is it possible for somebody with the proper authority to assign my proper ranking, taken from my first account which has been calculated over a period of 4,5 years, to that second account? I would really appreciate it if I could skip the [?] part of the whole enterprise. My second opponent didn’t even bother to make a first move (even though we have played a couple of times before but that was not obvious of course) and all of a sudden I remembered that having a [?] can be a bit of a bother

I’m not sure if that’s possible and if it is I’m not sure if it’s typically done, so I’ll leave that for others to comment on.

I will say that you don’t stay with a [?] for too long, rank tends to stabilise quite quickly.

That being said, if you are unable to have someone else change the account rank I’d suggest writing “hi” or “have a good game” to your opponent (if you do not already do so). If I come across an opponent with an uncertain rank I will typically cancel the game, unless

  1. their history shows they have lost games and these losses are due to resignations, rather than disconnections/timeouts, or
  2. they are willing to say hello.

Either of these situations indicates to me that my opponent is not likely to disconnect/timeout. Perhaps saying hello in all of your games, at least until your rank settles, might help reassure your opponents and prevent some cancellations.

Thank you for the reply and suggestions. However, I always write “Hello. Enjoy the game!’“ before the game starts and “Thank you for the game. Kind regards” at the end. No silly abbreviations, just plain words. I know the [?] phase will end sooner or later but I’d like to skip that part. Making an invitation myself, with the [?], will probably not gain serious attention and if I accept one there’s no time for my opponent to check my profile since this account is meant for live-games. There’s no time for that. Besides, there’s nothing to see yet :upside_down_face:

We literally do not have a way of “setting a person’s rank”, other than asking anoek to reach into the database manually and change it. Which he surely would not agree to, because that’s a recipe for disaster.

I think the hope is that the question that asked you “how experienced are you” gets you pretty close, and only a few games needed to stabilize.

If you could tolerate playing a bot, you could do that for a couple…

Thank you @GreenAsJade, that’s a clear answer. I kind of expected something like that.
I tried two bots actually, but both played ‘unranked’ as it turned out. I’ll try some more to get it over with :slightly_smiling_face:

Also remember that these initial games can be 9x9 to make it faster.

I am a bit puzzled about the request.

On one hand you have the impression that your rank would be different on different time settings. On the other hand you want to create an account for a specific time setting, but want the rank from another account with different time settings on this account.

To me this feels like a contradiction.

Also the desire for special treatment, when literally thousands of people manage to get a rank from a ? just fine.

Play with a bot 9x9 ranked games, you should get a first ranking quickly and without the difficulty to get opponents ([?])

No desire for a special treatment, just a question.

I understand the confusion. I addressed my issue on other occasions.
I hope this will clarify:

I have set up a second account for live games as suggested by other users with the same issue (large difference in rank between time settings). I already have a steady ranking of 13 kyu (live settings). I hoped there would be an easy way to immediately start with that rank.

In that case, why not keeping this account for live games, if it’s accurate?

And use the new one for correspondence? That might be better

I think if you’re on the homepage of a new account theres a way to start close (well closer) to the rank you want.

I think it’ll still display rank as a question mark, because the deviation is high, but the actual rating will be closer.

Not perfect because some brackets are quite wide, but so you know it’s an option in theory.

You could also test it on beta, and see what ranks it gives each account and if you’re happy then make a main site account for example.

I chose intermediate, but like you said, the range is still 10 ranks. I was just wondering if there would be an easy fix, as I have been through the whole ‘getting settled’ experience before. There isn’t and that’s fine by me. No harm in just asking, right?
The suggestion made by @Groin is a good one. I should have thought of that myself. Instead of using my second account for live-games I’ll use it for correspondence games in which there’s enough opportunity and time to explain if necessary. There are people who I play correspondence games with on a regular basis who might be a bit surprised I use a different and new account
