Uhm… looks wrong to me … what am I missing here?

Tempted to change this to “The first move in a game of Go has more possibilities than the number of grammatical particles in ‘The standard model of the entire universe’.”

But maybe you or someone else can explain it to me, I guess there’s some joke that is evading me, as ever so often :sweat_smile:

AFAIK it is the number of legal Go board positions that is larger than the (assumed) number of subatomic particles in the (known) universe.

These are the particles in the standard model. You will probably have heard of the electron, the photon, and the Higgs boson. Things like protons and neutrons are made of up and down quarks. Of course, up quarks, down quarks and electrons will make up most of the matter you are familiar with in your everyday life.

The joke is the number of particles in the universe is often used as a point of comparison to show just how large some other numbers are. The meme, on first glance, appears to do the same thing but it’s actually making a comparison to a relatively small number.

So, what confused me was that it said “the standard model of the entire universe” (emphasis added) – is it really called that?

In @PRHG’s image it says “standard model of elementary particles” … if that meme had had it this way, or even if it only said “the standard model” I might not have stumbled.

Not at all, I took some liberty there :sweat_smile: The standard model does attempt to explain all the matter in the universe, but it’s notably missing something - gravity. It’s also missing any good candidates for dark matter. Maybe when it’s complete we’ll find exactly 361 (or 362? or 169?) particles.

This thing was intended as silly misleading clickbait but now I’m feeling sorry that you took it so seriously. I’ll add a link to the pedantry thread directly from the original post and hope that helps :grin:

Haha, yes, it did already somewhat because I had read that even before I came here to see your meme :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: but still fell for it – mostly because I didn’t know that the “family” of the elementary particles is called “Standard Model” :roll_eyes:
