This question was interesting…
I didn’t know that black stones are bigger than white stones!
It is also because of the optical illusion. White stones seem to be a little bigger than black ones.
The other reason is about japanese aesthetics. Everything should be smooth and clear, but not perfect. Due to the black stones being a little bigger, the stones fit not perfectly in one line across the smaller side.
Main reason is optical illusion. Usually stones fit well on the board it’s up tu you if you don’t want them to align perfectly
. Schlemper did the Insei school in secret. He even succeed in becoming pro but refuse it. Under pressure he accepted to reveal the whole thing many years later only.
Try it with a proper set. ![]()
I had like 15 sets and boards home… Of various origin
European champions;
I confess this one was a bit tricky (and difficult if you keep not using Google) but I was interested to see if there will be some bias lol.
Anyway the only wrong result is Svetlana D. who finished in fact number 1 in front of Alexander D. second.
For strong player who never been an Insei it’s
Matthew MacFadyen
You can find an old thread about this in the forum.
For the Go Centers, which sadly are closing one after the other, the only one fruit from my imagination (never existed) is
Bucarest
Lol I actually guessed this one correctly ![]()
wabi-sabi
that one can be derived from the iron curtain..
I’d think you mean with a Japanese set?
AFAIK what was said about the size of black stones applies only to Japanese stones, and maybe it applies even to shell & slate stones only.
My sets: it includes shell and slate and a shinkaya board. But I never bought a car.
@jlt This question was split quite evenly…
Kyo Kagen (Hsu Chiayuan) was born in Taiwan in 1997.
Cho U (Zhang Xu) was born in 1980 in Taiwan.
Rin Kaiho (Lin Haifeng) was born in 1942 in Shanghai but his family moved to Taiwan in 1946 and he is a Taiwanese citizen.
O Meien (Wang Mingyuan) was born in Taiwan in 1961.
Kono Rin is Japanese, born in 1981.
Question 2:
“Under the stones tesuji”.
I had no idea about this one. After answering I had to research because at first I thought they meant a snapback and then realized something else is meant. 94% got it right. Looks like I lived under a stone. Hue hue hue.
Snapback is kind of like the opposite: you sacrifice one stone to eat many stones. But yeah, it can get confusing so I didn’t add it as one of the options haha.
This tesuji is famous to be a headache and often missed, but with a bit of training it will become as familiar as any other.
WOW!!
