Hey all — I’ve been working on a little side project: Go-themed shirt designs.
I have zero background in graphic design, t-shirts, or anything remotely fashionable — but I got obsessed with the idea and figured I’d just start throwing stuff out there and see what people think.
Attached are some
concepts I’ve made so far. Totally open to feedback — brutal honesty welcome. Layout, spacing, concept, phrasing, etc — if something feels off or dumb, let me know.
Hey thank you! And yes, good call on the atari… Considering i’m likely to sell 5 total shirts, maybe i’m not too concerned?
Ah good eye on the squiggles… So i used a GPT program to merge all of my concepts into one image, since the forum wouldnt let me post more than one picture (since i am a new member to the form, but a 10 year member on OGS… ??). Looks like the image creation made some weird edits… Similar to the 3-3 shirt not having the “a” and “b” or stones on the actual intersections…
You should be able to post more than one picture, you can try to copy and paste them individually in a post, that’s generally how I do it.
I’d recommend against using AI to do something like combining multiple images in to a single image, currently they tend to make additional unintended modifications.
Wow, with zero background in graphic design, t-shirts, or anything remotely fashionable, this is an impressive first try. Hope you wil go on with this project.
About the designing
White:
even without the squiggles and the missing white stones, this one is way too chaotic and restless for me
the text every day … is a bit lame (and why all words starting with a capital?)
study a little bit more about lettertypes. There is a world to win there.
Yellow:
I like this one for its simplicity. Strictly limited it to the essentials. Well done.
in other colours there are often things that are not needed.
Other colours:
green: again a lame text. How about: Aji never dies, it just fades away?
why the three black little circles down in the hourglass, while the sand in the top is all black?
red/orange: too dominant lettering
Most important: keep it as simple as possible, leave out all non essentials. If you need too much “tricks” to tell your little story in the design, then you are missing the point.
I particularly like the bamboo joint and the atari for being a very clean design, and containing an in-joke that only Go players would get - and others would ask about ; )
I also prefer without boxes (again, to keep it looking clean)
The love language one is probably most ‘current’. Although maybe it would be more appropraite to have ‘3-3 is my toxic trait’!
I’m not sure if you are actually planning to make/sell these, but would love you to make some boxy fit that are fashionable for women right now. I often see fun t-shirts and don’t buy them because the only options are classic male fit, which are really unflattering, or super-tight female fit, which isn’t what I want in a t-shirt.
Hey thank you!! And am so appreciative of your feedback on design.
White: Very much agree. Hindsight pretty cheesy with the text. Might be a lot better with just the board. Also agree i have a LOT to learn about the font/lettertypes/spacing with words/text. I will definitely do some more research here to get things a little more balanced and aesthetically pleasing.
Yellow: Yeah i liked how this one turned out with the minimalist layout. Will definitely try to implement that in some current and future designs. Less is more!
Other Colours: Yep, cheesy texts… Hourglass originally had 2 black and 1 white, another GPT error..
This is perfect! Much prefer “toxic trait” to “love language”. Thanks!!!
Yes good call. So i am actually trying to setup an Etsy store. Will definitely look at available options for wider range of fits and styles more than the standard.
