Handicap system

Could you point me to the documentation about how the handicap system work? I really couldn’t find it. That’s all. I found out about the pattern of handicap stones when I was studying and I found some old games of mine with 1 and 2 handicap (I didn’t even know I played games with handicap). No stones were added in any games and sometimes there was a 2.5 komi and sometimes 4.5.

For the record, since you said you’re looking at old games, the system has changed over time and that wiki page just shows the latest info we have about how it works.

Thanks! How do I explain the following inconsistency: there are 2 games with different komi values (2.5 and 4.5), but both with 1-handicap? The games were live 9x9 with japanese rules, when I was around 35k. So the “Rank difference” was huge, because my opponents were around 24k. The settings of the column “HC” were something that they chose? And I thought that at last in the 2-handicap I would see stones in the board when the game begins, but just the komi value was adjusted.

Oh ok, I’m looking at october.

These are both possible komi values for 1-handicap games listed in the 9x9 table.

I’m not sure if something special happens for ranks under 25k.

And unfortunately, it’s impossible to tell if a given game was an auto handicap game in most cases.

Would auto handicap or choosing the value “1” with custom handicap make a difference in the komi if the final value for handicap is “1”? I only see 4.5 with 1 handicap stone in the table, for 9x9 games (if “Rank difference” = “HC” in the game history column)

So when your settings are like this?

I have no idea what that will do with the komi. Maybe someone else will know, or you could run some tests. Also I don’t know why anyone would do that.
