How exactly do the site ladders work?

Hiya,

I just joined the site 19x19 ladder, i read the information about it in the FAQ so understand who i can challenge etc. What I couldn’t see written there was how exactly you climb the ladder, as in, what happens when you win or lose? Is it that whenever you beat someone, you immediately take their place in the ladder, and they are shunted down one place? Waht about if you win against someone who is positioned below you, do you still go up the ladder or does it have no effect on where you are?

When you win someone lower in the ladder, nothing happens
It is like you describe for higher.
