I think it would be better if we listed out all the countries as we might not know some flags

You can see the full list of country names by clicking on the flag counter, which brings you to a website showing more detailed statistics:

The flag counter on my profile anyways only shows the top 20 countries/regions (in terms of number of visitors from each), but the link above shows the full list.

If there wouldn’t be indexing we could go in abc order.

We can have both numbering and alphabetical ordering with painless updating.

Here is a really neat trick with Discourse: you can number all of the items in a list with 1., but Discourse will fix the numbering. For example

1. Alice
1. Bob
1. Charlie
1. Dave

becomes

1. Alice
2. Bob
3. Charlie
4. Dave
