How strong is the offline go engine in the sente app?

loving ogs.

the sente app is amazing for trying out moves and comparing them against ai suggestions! i know this is an offline app and based on katago. it’s definitely not 9p because i can beat it with a couple of stones handicap.

what kind of katago does it use? what’s it rated at?

Well, if this is you (screen print) and you can beat it with a couple of stones handicap then (assuming a couple means two and also assuming your rank has reached a more or less stable niveau) I would guesstimate that its strength is ~5k.

Definitely not kyu. I tried it a couple times and got crushed.

Hi, thank you for the kind words. I am the author of sente, but can’t remember which katago I used. It was one of the smallest networks available at that time (3 years ago) and I think I let it at 0 lookahead (or very low just enough not to just lose to ladders).

It is definitely not 5k as it absolutely murders me, even when I was playing at 6k OGS. By asking a few players on Reddit they rate it at about 4d, but take that with a grain of salt.

If you can beat it with only 2 stones handicap and no take backs that would be quite remarkable.

I’d be curious if some Dan ppl would try it and weigh in on this.

I would agree with the 3d - 5d range. I can get an advantage playing complicated joseki but its shape and direction are a bit better than mine. It does miss its own weaknesses and plays weird moves here and there. I go even against it at 2 handicap with no take backs

Being an offline engine, it might vary based on your phone’s hardware too.

thanks! i can beat it on 9x9 with two stones but yeah… haven’t beat it otherwise ahahha.
a bit starstruck that the author of sente replied to my thread!

its MUCH harder to win against 2 stones on 9x9 than against 2 stones on 19x19

I don’t expect difference in what the AI will guess but simply on how long it will take (although I may be wrong?)

I think that handicap (without komi) is appropriate for a gap of roughly 8 ranks.

Not 15? Doesn’t OGS estimate that a handicap stone on 9x9 is worth 6 normal handicap stones? 2 * 6 + (½ * 6)?

When there is no komi, the first handicap stone is not a “full” handicap stone but just half. So 2 handicap stones is actually 1½ “full” stones handicap and with 6 ranks per “full” stone I get 1½ * 6 = 9 ranks.

But AGA uses a full handicap stone for 4 ranks (1½ * 4 = 6 ranks) and I think BGA uses 5 ranks (1½ * 5 = 7.5 ranks). But I think 6 is closer to the “truth” than 4, so that’s why I said “roughly 8 ranks”.

Oh, I added that adjustment instead of subtracting it. 12 + 3 instead of 12 - 3. Thanks for clearing that up

tried it against Katrain’s calibrated rank and Katago 1d barely beat the offine katago on the Sente app on a 13x13. crazy capturing race and ko fights.
