Around move 48 I invaded. Could I have made life or not? And if so how could I, and how can I tell whether to invade or to just pass? I resigned because so many stones were captured.

Move 49 should be a relatively simple invasion to kill. The white group is strong enough that white only needs to limit the space available for black. White will end up making 2 eyes in the process and black will not have enough space for any eyes. The only way this black invasion lives would be due to a very serious blunder by white.
