I have terrible spatial memory, so I built a tool to help train it

Hi everyone, I’ve built a website for memorizing board game piece positions!

The inspiration came from my own struggles. I’ve always had a poor spatial memory, so I created this tool to help improve it. Here is how the game works:

  1. Memorize: You have up to 30 seconds to observe the positions of black and white stones on the board.

  2. Reconstruct: Re-place the stones on a blank board from memory. (use peek to see the positions again in 10s)

  3. Adaptive Difficulty: The system automatically adjusts the number of stones based on your performance.

The site also features light/dark mode, different languages, progress tracking, achievement system, and a login function to help you stay motivated and see your improvement over time.

The project is currently in Alpha testing. If you’re interested, please feel free to try it out for free and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your feedback!

P.S. All problems are adapted from Master Wu Qingyuan’s “Dictionary of Tesuji”

I have made an account…I, too, have terrible spatial memory, so this may well be a good tool for me. I managed to get through the beginner level, with some ease, using the peek option after one attempt. But the next level up feels quite substantially harder.

If I may also add a suggestion, there should be a “Play now” button during the time that a “Peek” takes, having to wait nine seconds after only placing a single stone incorrectly is something of a pain.

All in all, so far, I think that it’s a great idea. and very well executed.

Thanks for all the feedback in alpha 1 testing.

Now, GoMemo have a big update:

  1. Base on real Kifu: no longer feels like random moves, they are all based on real kifu now
  2. 9, 13 and 19 board size: wanna try something different? Challenge yourself in another board size!
  3. Move numbers on the stone: now, we have move numbers on each stone base on kifu irl, better for you to memorize it
