Hi everyone! I’m new here and still figuring things out. I can’t find where to change the game rules to the Japanese version . Truly appreciate your help!!
Please check the screenshot for reference: Screenshot by Lightshot
bots on ogs use chinese only
you can play exactly the same in chinese rules as you would in japanese and winner almost always would be same
Welcome on the OGS forum!
You cannot change the game rules when you take a challenge.
You can chose the rules you like if you create a custom challenge.
Anyway I dunno why this would be important as you don’t score the game yourself and the differences between rules really shouldn’t matter for 99% of amateur players especially for no experts in the game.
What could be a little bit interesting in fact for a beginner are Chinese rules because
You can put handicap stones where you want if you play handicap
You can try things inside your opponent territories without risking to lose some points
In rare complicated positions you can just play to clarify it without having to study all the special cases mentioned in the Japanese rules.
So it’s bit more convenient especially for a full beginner.
So I encourage you to spare your time and get more offers by accepting games without even considering which ruleset is proposed, all are perfectly fine as long as you are not playing face to face with a board and stones. In this real life situation you may be concerned by cultural aspects like the ways we score the game.
In short:
Forget the rules. Accept all. Enjoy the game!
Besides this, if you can find human partners of a similar level as you, you ll have more fun to play together as with a bot. IMHO.
Thanks for answering. I just realized that users can change the rules when they hit ‘Rematch’ after completing one match!
Thank you so much for such detailed instructions! I figured out how to change the rules. There’s a function on OGS that made me think there was a difference between the two rule sets . But yes, I understand now that the games and rules aren’t really about winning. I’m here to learn and grow through GO!
