I'm a Go beginner, so I built a free tool to review my OGS games properly (with in-browser KataGo)

Hi everyone,

I’m a Go beginner, and every teacher I’ve learned from has told me the same thing: reviewing your games is the key to improving, even more important than doing problems. What I was missing was a systematic way to do it. My reviews were scattered, and I kept forgetting what I’d learned by the next game.

So I built a review tool for my own OGS games, and I’d like to share it here since it’s made for OGS players. It’s free and open source.

Honte — https://connorxwolf.github.io/honte-review/

What it does

  • Enter your OGS username, player ID or profile URL to get a 12-character sign-in code. No email, no password.

  • Recent games lists your latest 20 finished OGS games; Other OGS player lists anyone’s. Pick one and it opens on a board with players, ranks, komi, rules and result filled in.

  • No OGS account yet? You can get a code without one and link your OGS account later.

The review flow

1. Write why you won or lost and the 3 moves you think mattered, before any AI.

  1. Run KataGo in your browser (b6 / b10 / b40 models, WebGPU on Chrome/Edge). It draws the win-rate graph and finds the 3 moves where you lost the most.

3.Review each of those moves: better move, loss, mistake type, and what you were thinking.

4.Compare your own key moves with what KataGo says about them.

5.Save lessons and variations for next time.

About the OGS API: Honte only makes read-only requests for public game lists (/api/v1/players/{id}/games/) and SGFs (/api/v1/games/{id}/sgf), one player at a time, when you click. It never logs in to OGS or changes anything. If this doesn’t fit how OGS would like its API used, please let me know and I’ll adjust.

Bug reports and ideas very welcome, especially from stronger players and teachers. How do you review your games, and what would make this more useful?
