Important Philosophical Questions + POLLS

That can even be the case for longer time setting so for any time setting a timeout can be because of the bad management of time in itself (because if the complexity of the game) or because external constraints or just a resign.

Yup, that’s all of my losses by timeout: I don’t know a move, and then I wait too long finding one until I forget to submit before the time runs out (sometimes even as bad as “oh yeah, I’m timing out in two hours, I’ll decide on a move in 30 minutes” and then forgetting it).

That’s by far the most annoying way to lose in my opinion. Sadly I’ve been doing it regularly lately…

Space Invaders.

I put other because I never used any word for that. I do understand shuang hu in itself (may miss the tones in pinyin but ok) but never heard too.

Very fitting indeed, the shape being a B52 having lost his two bombs.

If we talk about the full shape with white in the dia , it reminds me of some space ships from the saga starwars

What is your most usual way to manage long ladders (Shicho, stairs…)?

  • I read it from the start
  • I move it near the end
  • I draw a corridor which he should stay inside
  • I have my own way, please tell us.

First contemplate yourself in a mirror then tell us if you feel somewhere that you are a go addict. (Ok I keep it private again)

  • Yes
  • No

Why keep the second poll private? We all know what people are going to vote.

When everyone knows the result, it’s even more important to keep it private

Well it depends if the game is finished or not.

Ιt’s about how you much you identify (or: ascribe the first person pronoun singular I) with the colour you play. Do you say “I win” or do you say “black wins” or “the black stones win”?

I will say “I win”, but I say “white loses”. Or “you win”, if white is winning and I want to be polite to the opponent. And I will say “black loses” when I play badly

Makes me remember a Yahoo user question about something like “can we forbid video games for adults who lose so much time on these?”

What would throw you off more?

  • “Official” Go board goes from 19x19 to 20x20
  • “Official” Go board goes from 19x19 to 18x18

Both ideas make me cringe. :scream:

Both because I’d rather keep a tengen (17 or 21)

With a bunch of correspondence games running, you will meet time-out along the way by some of your opponents. Even if the results of a mass time-out will be annuled, some of them will still count toward your rating, inducing a bias between your real level and the calculated one.

So what is the estimation of this bias in your own ranking?

  • 1 level
  • 2 levels
  • 3 levels
  • More as 3
  • Nothing really noticeable.

Let’s say that statistically those who do timeout are 50% stronger and 50% weaker, so only half of them must be considered.
Furthermore, other games that aren’t timeout reduce the impact.

I believe that my ability fluctuates more than that.

My linguistic poll addiction is too strong to overcome ;o

When importing new loanwords (eg. kotatsu, one of those comfy Japanese pillow-table things, or miko, a priestess or “shrine maiden”) into a gendered language, do you…

  • Always make them masculine
  • Always make them feminine
  • Always make them neuter (if there is that gender)
  • Compare them to words of similar meaning
  • Compare them to words of similar form
  • Compare them to words of similar etymology
  • Make them random genders
  • Try to avoid having to gender them

As an Anglophone, this is a question I get curious about.
