In “Learn to play Go”, question 3 in section 5.22 are shown in Figure 1.
This section aims at guiding beginners to prevent true eye by making it false eye. The answer are shown in Figure 2. Figure 3 are wrong. However, in question 3 if Black really wants to capture the whole white group, Figure 3 are right and Figure 2 are wrong. In Figure 3, Black creats a miai so that white can’t make the eye at the right side in one move, and prevents white’s another possible eye on the left edge. On the contrary, Figure 2 only prevents the eye at the right side, white can try to make another eye on the left edge, leading to ko fight (originally survival, it’s wrong) of the white group as shown in Figure 4. The results may be misleading for beginner looking for advancing Go skills.
