When I come to the site, up at the top-right there are usually a few alerts. They appear as links with an X next to them. Clicking the X removes the alert, as expected. Is there a way to go back and see them, or are they gone forever?

They are gone. One way to see them again is to open online-go page in incognito mode. The most recent ones are then displayed.
