I am trying to play on OGS with friends who are new to Go and they keep having “username is already in use” for names that are actually free. Can anyone recommend a solution?
It is supposed to be the case only way that message is generated is if the username you are trying to select does in fact already exist.
New accounts are created at OGS at a rate of about 40-50 per hour, so there is no shortage of workable usernames.
Solution: try a different username.
You’re also welcome to PM me the one(s) you’re trying after searching on the main site to confirm whether they exist or not … maybe there is a bug, but it is only affecting “your friends” as far as we know.
Do we have some issues with selecting usernames? They also had some problems, i did the name change manually and it seemed to work just right Problem with changing name

Yes, they were trying to create an account name on mobile. I was looking up the usernames they inputted to double check.
For instance they tried the following, Alka291, and despite the no results it said the name was taken.
Even while trying a string of random numbers they got “this username is taken” then “username too long”
