just lost a game where i was told by the analizer button i was behind by 75 % so i gave up Then my opponent tells me i was ahead – what the deal with that analyzer button Does it work or not?
i can’t trust what is telling me ?
Either I’m ahead by a % or iam behind % i can’t be both or different each time i press the button on the same move. This does not make sense to me and iam sure others are just as confused
Please link the game so we can understand better.
Actually, you certainly can have a different outcome each time you press the button.
This is because the estimator has to guess what will happen.
Especially if you are asking it at a time when it is totally uncertain - when the borders are nowhere near clear.
The less certain the outcome, the more different the answer will be each time you press the button.
The analysis tool for score estimation should be used by pressing the button and looking at what it is scoring, then deciding how much of that you believe. It shows you on the board what it thinks each player might get, so it is your job to see if it is guessing right.
I would recommend not using the score estimate until you learn how to estimate scores on your own.
probably
Mmmm … maybe.
It also can actually be a tool to learn how to score, if you approach it that way.
When the borders are closed or mostly closed, you can use it and see if you understand what it is saying.
Which is more or less what you have to do anyhow to get value out of it
In the game linked by trohde, I painted the zones controlled by black and by white. Surely you can see, without counting, that the black area is much bigger than the white one, so Black is ahead by a lot.
@NEWOLDGUY the estimator is not really precise, sometime trapped stones look alive and it depends on who has the next move. the scoring is only really accurate when your review the game after its finished. Its a tool that can help you but you can’t rely on it 100%.
Not to nitpick, but just to avoid any potential confusion, I think this is a typo for “you can’t rely”
thanks for catching that @Samraku Its been fixed
After studying this problem for a long time last night after i stopped playing, i can see why this button tool is so inaccurate and really shouldn’t be allowed to function on those 3-day games i play, like on the 5-minute games where it is not available to use i will now use it less to see where iam in a game and maybe use it to see where my stones can go rather than which ones are lost thanks all for the input it all put it into prespective for me
also i have to apologize for ranting so much here lately and will try to keep it to a min. from now my meds when i get frustrated have an affect on me, and i say things which are a little too hot in the fire of self deprecation of my play and so come sounding quite different than i meant.
Please never ask for analysis while you are in game. It is cheating.
It is not cheating if analysis is on (that’s the default in correspondence games).
I’m referring to this tool.
It is just a score calculator. It doesn’t show who is ahead. To use this tool for counting it is required to mark territory by hand.
Be careful (once again) that OGS uses 2 different score estimators, the one authorized during the game being very bad and not based on an AI.This is a choice made to not give many hints to the player. With search, you can find debates here about this choice. Myself I find it detrimental because… Too bad. It may induce complete failures, like a trap instead of helping.
If you take care of the goal of the game, you better train your own estimation as relying on a weak tool provided by OGS. Even more if you have difficulties to assess when this tool is wrong.
The good estimator based on katago that you can access automatically when your game is finished is much more useful if you like to review your game.
Yes I was referring to the bad score estimator be cause that’s the one OP was using before resigning. I don’t use it because it’s too unreliable and misleading.
