Keyboard input to make moves

Hello OGS!

For those that prefer to use a keyboard instead of a mouse to enter your moves there is now a built in way to do that:

Head to Play Go at online-go.com! | OGS and toggle on this option:

You’ll now have an input field near your pass button where you can enter the coordinates you wish to place at:

Simply type the move and press enter! If you have submit-to-move enabled, you might want to enable the Autofocus submit button option as well so you can press enter, then enter again to actually submit the stone.

Nice to have options. Thx!

Why is this a thing? lol I cannot imagine myself ever using this. But I guess someone requested it?

Accessibility (maybe ?)

Yes primarily accessibility, and keyboard heavy users, it’s come up multiple times over the years, and it just came up again.

Aside from accessibility, it can be used to play blindfolded! (although this also needs the moves to be read out, which I think we don’t have official support for yet, but I seem to remember someone making an extension for it?)

Now there will be people mistyping instead of misclicking

I’ll probably be one of them XD

Next step like with modern camera. Your camera will look at what you look and validation with a blink of the eye. Perfect for ultra blitz.

You know.. it’s probably already possible today with Vision Pro or similar headsets

Possible but not integrated

No i mean integrated. IIRC those headsets use eyetracking as input. And they support browser and iPhone apps. Put them together and you have OGS with your eyes!

Ultimately, OGS will connect to your brain and just play where you think of playing. No need for any kind of interface at all!

“Don’t touch the stones until you’re sure where to play” → “Don’t touch the mouse until you’re sure where to play” → don’t think about your move until you’re sure where to play???

Or more annoying would be if you had something like spell check autocorrecting your input

Loved the feature.
I’d ask if its possible to write “pass” to mass my turn, for pass we still need to use mouse

well, “pass” is different in different languages which is why I avoided that, but also you can hit ‘tab’ to advance to the pass button and press enter, so there’s no need to use the mouse - does that meet your needs?

I smell a good idea here. Katago as autocorrection. “B4 will die in gote, the user certainly meant B5, let’s correct that!”

Think B4 you play, after that it will be too L8.

Yes I actually did that today.
But still was wondering if writing was possible.
But because of different languages it seems like it’s possibility a waste of time to implement :sweat_smile:
