*Edit notes: After re-reading this post and seeing that it is a jumble of repetitive, half defined terms and concepts, I decided to edit and rewrite several portions of it.
Let’s attempt to use the correspondences between systems as ways to improve our understanding of each system better. The idea is to model the elements of one (such as Go, or Life in general) and equate them directly to the elements of the other so that we can more easily define and evaluate each.
LEVIATHAN -
Leviathan is typically described as an enormous serpent or dragon that lives within the ocean. He is mentioned in several Hebrew texts and is often described as an embodiment of chaos, threatening to eat the damned when their lives are over. Christianity identifies him as the demon of the deadly sin envy, which is an emotion that occurs when a person lacks and desires something that another person possesses, or wishes that that person lacked it. According to Ophite diagrams, Leviathan encapsulates the space of the material world.
There are a multitude of philosophies aligned with what is called the “Left Hand Path” (several similar religious or philosophical systems of thought proposing ideas such as self-sufficiency, self-accountability and responsibility, egoism, and some going as far as seeking separation from God or the Universe) which view the concept of Leviathan in a different light, and it is primarily these versions of Leviathan that I’ll be using in my attempt to correspond him to the essence of Go.
Michael Aquino, founder of the Temple of Set, wrote a short text called “The Diabolicon,” which is an essay written as a group of narratives from several Fallen Angels,. The text (which may still be available as a free PDF; Google search) ends with “The Statement of Leviathan,” a small section of Leviathan’s self-descriptive explanations and instructions for reaching him. In the “Statement,” he describes himself as being before God or Angel, Daemon or man, saying that he was alone, the principle of continuity and ageless existence. Leviathan is the “absolute”, which neither Heaven nor Hell may effect, and when you behold his presence you may know that “thy end hath been attained.” Upon beholding Leviathan you recognize that you have become the perfect mind, not subject to a greater Will, who shall remake the Cosmos according to his Will.
A different LHP (Left Hand Path) school of thought describes Leviathan as the representation of the direction West, “being the ocean and abyss.” It is claimed his name means Crooked Serpent/Dragon who is timeless and immortal. The Midrash (Hebrew text) depicts him (or his counterpart Behemoth) as being “the first of the ways of God,” the common modern interpretation of which means that only God is strong enough to control or affect him. He is then related to the Sumerian deity Tiamat, dragon of chaos and the abyss from which the world was created, as “the whole world rests on the scales of Leviathan.” This version of Leviathan has power connected to his eyes, using them to illuminate great power which manifests as rays of light. He is considered to be Oroborus, the serpent that eats its own tail and surrounds the world in its embrace.
This system’s version of Leviathan is said to be the circle in which Samael, the Masculine part of the mind containing consciousness and Willpower, and Lilith, the Feminine part of the mind which is the instincts that emanate from the primal unconscious, are joined together into what’s called Infernal Union. If I understand it correctly, this harmonizing of the parts of the mind give us access to our so-called True Will, which is at the very least a type of guide or guiding principle centered around our deepest innate desire.
LEVIATHAN CORRESPONDING TO CHIDAKASHA -
I recently came across an idea I had never heard of before, the metaphysical Hindu concept of chidakasha, the “space of consciousness” or “inner sky” which is an infinite realm described as both the foundation and enduring essence behind all perceived reality, unaffected by the transient nature of physical forms. Chidakasha is luminous, all-pervading, innately sentient and full of pure awareness, and is associated with the Ajna Chakra, the Third Eye positioned in the stomata behind the center of the forehead.
There are several connections to Leviathan that are easy to make here, such as the foundation and essence behind all perceived reality being equivalent to “the whole world rests on the scales of Leviathan” and Leviathan as the Absolute, existing alone before any other being. The most important aspect of the correspondence with Chidakasha is, to me, the idea of it (and thus Leviathan) being associated with the Third Eye Chakra.
THIRD EYE, ESSENCE WITHIN THE MIND -
If we are able to successfully equate enough elements/components of Leviathan to Chidakasha, then we can include in our overall identification of Leviathan the idea of his connection to the Third Eye Chakra. According to another author I enjoy reading, the person who comes to fully possess his Third Eye is capable of moving any stone, crumbling any mountain, and cause any sea to shrink back from the shore upon which he stands. Possessing it is said to grant immortality, conversation with the Gods, the favor of every spiritual and natural element, “for all things indeed know the countenance of their Creator.”
This claim, that we are the creators of our reality (or I am the creator of all reality ), linked together with the aforementioned descriptions of Leviathan, begins to tell us more about the nature of our minds and how to access the foundational level mechanics of phenomena. However, this essay is about Leviathan and Go…
LEVIATHAN AND THE ESSENCE OF GO -
So, now, using the models of Leviathan listed above, how can we draw some useful conclusions about Go mechanics?
Leviathan being the Absolute, that which existed before anything else, brings up first the idea of the blank Go board, which is filled with the potential for an unknown but very large amount of legal moves. The board is the “realm” or place where all stones come into play, or manifest. It is where we use our analytical (conscious mind) and intuitive (sub/unconscious mind) abilities combined to decipher and affect the status of all stones present, each one having being calculated in relation to every other. The old Christian idea of Leviathan being the demon of envy, when we wanted to place our stone where the opponent just did, or when we want to take his group to gain territory for example.
There are countless correspondences, and I am exhausted so I leave that joyful exercise up to the reader.
But, the most important idea in regards to the Essence of Go and Leviathan I think is figuring out the Third Eye part of the equation.
