Black had a small lead in the early game, but from around move 80 (later middle game) black was slightly lacking territory. Black didn’t catch up in the late game, so white won.
During the late game (move 255 until move 162) black was blundering 10+ points and white managed to take the opportunity, but that didn’t affect the game result.
Thickness should be used for attacking, by driving the opponent’s weak group toward thickness. If instead you add stones to your already thick group, you end up overconcentrated. Moves 51, 55 and 57 feel small, you don’t make many points while helping White make a strong group facing the center:
AI auggests this
After Black 1, since White is not yet alive, White needs to escape with 2 (if White plays elsewhere then a black move would put a lot of pressure). Then Black continues to chase White while starting to make territory in the triangled area which is bigger than what you did in the game.
That’s very interesting. As an 8k I totally get the move at E6 “connect weak groups, connect my stones”.
I guess that 2 space not-bamboo-joint is more solid than it might appear due to being near the side like that ![]()
I also would have thought that white 2 might be nasty at E6 or E7: surrounding while making more space to run away.
I’m not saying these are correct thoughts - I like the look of the AI above of course - I’m just sharing how black’s thinking would have been like mine ![]()
The thing is that White’s corner has some weaknesses. For instance Black D4 is sente, so all black stones are connected, and Black is almost alive, so doesn’t fear an attack by White.
I hope this helps.
