looking for sage advice teaching in a game how to play

wow that was interesting i love the reversed letters and bent stems of some the letters very cool to see someone else’s language printed could someone translate???

That’s just Cyrillic script. Doesn’t google translate Ukrainian? Your opponent from one of the screenshotted games is surprised to see herself here, on the telly, as it were.

Your recent game with Amaranthus

I was glad to see that in this game with the bot Amaranthus you were holding your own, even if it was clearly ahead by the end. Very strangely, you resigned when you could easily have finished the game in about 6 more moves: you could have pushed into the gap at A8, and something like this would probably have ensued, completing the boundaries so that the game could be scored:

I repeat my suggestion that you play some games against Amaranthus and / or Agapanthus, taking a sliding handicap, but starting with a smaller handicap than I thought you would need. Two or three stones should give you a decent chance, to judge by this game, where you were only behind by 17 points. So try again, make sure you play Black, and specify a handicap of 3 stones. If you have to place your handicap stones yourself, play them on K10, D4 and K4. Adjust the handicap up after a loss and down after a win.

You might even find you need less handicap, if you do not start by making such a terribly inefficient 3×3 clump around D4. If 7 of those stones had been elsewhere, they would have helped you a lot more, and perhaps you could have even won.

Move-by-move teaching game

I have been thinking about how we could make this work for both of us. I think there are various requirements:

  • I would teach you Go, not “Delaying capture”!
    • I might want you to complete 2 or 3 games where you actually try to win (against bots or people – whatever you prefer), to show you are prepared to play real Go.
  • We should go through the introductory OGS course first, with me explaining anything you do not understand or see the point of.
  • I think your idea of getting comments move-by-move is right for you, as I think you need feedback as soon as possible after your moves, while you remember what you thought when you chose them.
    • A correspondence game may not be ideal, because it would delay the feedback, but it would let us both interrupt it at any time.
  • You should probably use Undo to take back some moves, to get into the habit of avoiding certain particularly bad moves.
  • We could make the game private if you prefer.

I shall DM you if I feel ready to embark on this.

Translating it

If you just want to know what it means, you can paste it into a site such as DeepL to translate it:

though you want to realise that “rofl” stands for “rolling on the floor laughing”.

Finding out more

If you see “і” it is quite likely to be Ukrainian, (but if you see “ъ” it is most likely Russian).

If you want to know more, you can look the words up in an online dictionary such as Wiktionary, e.g. Боже - Wiktionary, the free dictionary which gives you

which is unfortunately the capitalised form, but for Ukrainian you need the lowercase, so clicking on “See also: боже” you get to

clicking on бог to get

and realise the sentence starts “Oh God”.

well thank-you for the through explaination of how to do that language thing for others more versed in using their cpu. it was indepth for sure again thx for the input it was a very interested read mind you a little over my head but i still thank-oyu for trying

if anyone would like a game of chess iam at chess.com under lostatchess i have a score of about 386 iam a easy win there also but its quite different i play 7 day and 14 day games so give a buzz i would love to play

just as a side note my finger hurts by the time i scroll down to the end of this series of posts to get to the end to see if anything is new since everything i post seems to be lumped into this post series, but i see why now. the reason buts that’s for another post when iam ready to tackle the nay-sayers here or my meds kick me up to respond

Your tenacity to scroll 10 minutes every time you check for updates is to be applauded.

In case you want to make it easier for yourself, here’s an incomplete list of better options: from the forum main screen, click the thread title. It jumps you directly to the unread posts, or the bottom of the thread if there’s no new post.

If you already are in a thread, there’s an arrow down button you can click. You can also hold and drag the scrollbar(s) with the mouse, or hold arrow-down or the page-down keys on your keyboard.

If you like being physical, alternate between fingers. Or turn your mouse upside down and roll the mouse wheel over your desk.

Good luck

On a computer, if you look on the right, you see this gadget:

That shows you the number of the post you are looking at (103) and the total number of posts (248). You can drag the blue bulge to bump the bottom to see the last post, or anywhere else to see other parts of the thread.

On a phone it is more compact: you have this:

in the bottom right, and tapping that brings up the same scrolling device.

Interesting advices. But I guess dokbohm will try other ideas instead like starting somewhere in the middle an alternate between scrolling 10 down an 11 up until he reaches the bottom.

That seems unnecessarily sarcastic. I assume that he is what the says, an old man very unfamiliar with the digital world, with some afflictions that do not help and on medications which confuse him further. I think his apparent obstinacy is more a matter of being overwhelmed by the amount of advice and difficulty taking it on board.

I agree that there are other possible interpretations, mainly troll or AI experiment, but a confused old man seems just as plausible to me, if not more, and I rather applaud his persistence, however odd his behaviour may seem to others at first sight.

I just wish that confused old man would just once try the really nice and user friendly INTERACTIVE BEGINNER’S TUTORIAL.

He called it useless, which is of course unreasonably sweeping, but could perhaps reflect difficulties with the inductive reasoning required to deduce the rules from playing through examples. I do however agree that the course would probably be very helpful to him, which is why I mentioned helping him through it as a requirement for playing a teaching game.

as usall you start out and i agree with you and your observations are spot on .as far as the learning materials here i think i called them useless i was wrong they are useful to most people that is ones under the age of 25 that have a good grasp of go already i guess - but to a me they do not show me what i need that is strageries to use to process form point a to point b in getting better – but then we have ahd that disscusions before . i was only half kidding when i said it takes a lot to scoll to the bottom to see what os new - i was kind of making fun of myself on the amount of posts that seem to put up here - many months ago i did the same thing on chess.com but then i stopped posting there ( i guess their good fortune) maybe that will happen here who knows on another note, i started to break the 115 moves barrier almost every game so on to 120 maybe 125 moves per game as my next level. still at before 10 stones are gone so onward and upward who knows i may actually finish a game when i get to 150 to 175 moves

Hey you know how to make go players happy, just tell them we are more kind as chess players! (Joking )

You are right. But I couldn’t hold back after a long streak of similar impulses over the last weeks.
It is of course nearly every time better to not write such messages.

I am frustrated as I assume many others are. I even played a game with dokbohm once, but I guess he not even did read my advices after the game.
