Move Numbers Somehow Turned Off

Greetings, All–

Somehow I must have accidentally turned off or disabled the move numbers that appear within the stones on the demo board or on .sgf files.

I’ve searched the forum & didn’t find any answers that seemed to help; I’ve rebooted the system several times; gone back to “daylight” mode; tried a different browser (I’m on Chrome & I had the same issue in Safari; additionally, the numbers have also disappeared from the OGS app I use on my Mac as well); & I let my Mac sleep on it over night just in case it was over-tired. Alas, no joy.

I believe my “Themes & visuals” settings are all OK, with my site theme back to “dark” & “show variation move numbers” toggled on. And FWIW, the move numbers do show up in the little box where branches are shown (but the numbers do not appear within the stones on the board).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or ideas anyone might have.

As far as I know the stones never had the move numbers on them unless a variation was being played. Is this what you mean, that if you play a variation no move numbers are shown even though, as you mentioned, the relevant setting is on?

Hmmm–

This could be very embarrassing. I could have sworn that when I was working through a problem & had set it up on the demo board, & then toggled on “place alternate stones” to see if I could solve it, that each stone played would have a number on it.

Perhaps this is properly called a variation (I’m a rank beginner)?

Additionally, I also could have sworn that my .sgf game files also had turn numbers on the stones, but they to seem to have disappeared as well.

I admit I’m getting old, but I hope I’m not just dreaming this stuff up!

No worries. Even if your fears are well founded, others like me are also getting old and we dream up all kinds of stuff.

As for the move numbers on the stones, is it possible you exported the sgf file and reviewed it elsewhere? Many other screen displays in other apps and platforms will show the move numbers (unless you turn them off).

After I’m finished with a game I always take time to do a self-evaluation and I usually find various other platforms are more to my liking for this … and they all generate move #s on the stones. Possible this is what you’re recalling in your case?

No, I don’t think so as I really only do stuff on OGS. I think as PRHG mentioned what I’m talking about is playing a variation. I’ve quadruple-checked that the “Show variation move numbers” in the “Themes & Visuals” section of Settings is toggled on, so it’s a bit odd that it doesn’t seem to be working for me any longer.

Thanks!

A variation is something like this:

You can see at the bottom that a sequence of moves has been played, but if I play a different move than what has been played it creates a new branch. This new branch is a variation, and you can see that the stone I placed has a number on it. I took this image from a real game.

I just tried it on a demo board and can confirm that variations don’t have numbers. I haven’t used the demo board too extensively, but I don’t recall variations displaying numbers. I remember that I once had several branches set up on the demo board so I could take pictures to post in the forums to help another member, when I switched between branches I’m fairly certain none of the stones displayed numbers. But, I could be wrong.

To get around this you could set up the board position and then upload the sgf to your sgf library. Games in there will display variations.

Thanks for taking the time to walk me through this & to explain how to get what I’m after; I really appreciate it. Now, if only the problems were as easy….
