New layout of matchmaking

Hello, it is me or playing unranked games with a bot it is no longer possible? I don’t like the changes at all, when I was a beginner the old matchmaking layout always looked very logic to me.

another thing when it comes to playing with bots… you can’t choose anything like, color, komi, rules…

Use custom settings. See:

In the old layout it was possible to hide the scattergram of the available games.

Is that still possible (and if so how)?

the old one was much less awfull… At least i could get a game in a reasonnable time (1 to 2 mins). Now it takes at least 5 mins whatever time option i choose

Though none of the feedback (bot settings, hard-to-find custom games, excess buttons) was taken :man_shrugging:

But the launch has been great for forum engagement! :upside_down_face:

Still appreciate the hard work. I guess there should have been a permanent banner on the Play page about upcoming changes.

I think the option to play against bots on unranked games will be introduced back, apparently it was more or less a case about forgetting that aspect.

I think i dislike a bit is this tiny selection thing:

I feel like it should be larger and have some shading that better indicates that something is already selected. Maybe have 3 options instead just 2 since all those corr rengo challenges would def need their own subpage already ^^

So basically, something like lichess xD

Hi, how do I play unranked games against bots with my own time preferences? There doesn’t seem to be an option to customize this, and all games are ranked.

I went there expecting to see an army of flamethrowers … how disappointing. There’s one or two comments not liking it, and the same number or maybe more saying they do like it.

This FAQ might need a sticky: the answer is that in the short term: challenge the bot directly.

My average wait time for a 9x9 or 13x13 game were at MAX 1min but usually much less.

Now? I’ve waited >5 minutes twice today for 13 x 13 games with the ranks set from 20k to 7k. If I continuously fiddle around with the settings and times I’ll eventually get a game. But now it feels like I have to guess exactly which types of players are available for which board sizes, time settings, and ranks whereas before the matchmaker just did the work for me.

I really don’t understand the reason to get rid of the option to multi select board sizes. If you wanted a specific board size before you could pick just one. Reading the comments I see “simplify” being thrown around a lot… which is strange. Now there are more buttons you need to press and those buttons give you access to a smaller pool of players. It feels like this is the equivalent of saying you “simplified” a car by taking out the engine.

GO has a player base problem compared to chess. So I think established servers with decent sized communities should be more cautious when it comes to adding hurdles between players and actual playing of the game.

Curiously, this is at odds with the overall data we’re seeing.

Are you waiting for live or blitz/rapid games?

At the moment, it appears as if live games have an average wait of less than 20 seconds throughout the day, and a 95th percentile wait of 1 minute.

If the data is to be believed, means that you had two MASSIVE outliers in one day.

That’s certainly odd.

Blitz appears to be a bit more of a wait, not not much: 95th percentile at 2 minutes.

If anyone is seeing waits that you are sure bring this data into question, it would be good to know!

The time that you experienced a big wait, the game parameters, and how specifically you measured the time are what we need to know.

Removing hurdles to playing games is in fact what this whole change is about.

We’ve had consistent feedback that the old layout was confusing, with too many options, for new players.

Speaking as someone without any stock in this argument one way or another, i’m a little confused at the assertion that this change doesn’t simplify things.

There are now fewer settings to choose from. Yes, these settings were hidden by a menu before, but if you didn’t already know what button to click to start matchmaking, you might be pretty confused about what to expect (not you specifically, but every single person [read: many people] i’ve directed to the site have had this problem, as did i, myself).

I think the reason people think the previous setup was less of a hurdle than this current one is because it’s what they were accustomed to. The new layout is now more similar to standard matchmaking interfaces on other sites. I agree that change is annoying, especially after you’ve taken the time to get used to the way a particular program works, but if you take the time to get used to the new layout, you might be surprised at how little of a hurdle it actually is!

I strongly disagree with this point; is 9kyu -0/+4 a range of 9kyu to 13kyu, a range of 9k to 12k, a range of 6k to 9k, or a range of 5k to 9k?

Maybe this answer is obvious to some people, but it isn’t obvious to me, and the wrong answer might be what some people think is the obvious answer.

Hi! Im ok with the new and old matchmaking, the thing is…is never respecting the rank range! All games are with oponents with ranks I didnt set (example: 10k - 7k = match with a 14k (???) I have to cancel 5 or 6 of 10 games I play because of this. Please, please, please, fix that. Thanks a lot.

As much as I’m frustrated by my personal experiences if the data says things are, on average, faster, I can’t argue against numbers.

I still don’t understand how removing the multi select is a benefit. It seems having players open to more types of games would increase the number of matchmaking opportunities and therefore decrease average time looking for a game, would it not?

I can’t speak for the numbers, but anecdotally, I’ve witnessed a couple occasions where people have accidentally queued for multiple types of games when they only meant to queue for one, then canceled the game after matching up with a board size they hadn’t intended. I wonder whether that played into the decision at all, or if it was really just to make matchmaking more straightforward for people unfamiliar with the site?

How do you manage when it was like this before?
I guess by just not using that feature?

The point here is it make the selection as it was previously isn’t it?

Disclaimer: I have no real clue and never used it previously or now!
