Currently, none of the OGS Joseki Explorer (OJE) provides Chinese (simplified) translation for any of the joseki explanation as far as I am aware. I also can’t find a way to translate these OJE joseki explanations into Chinese on translate.online-go.com .
I saw a post mentioning that OJE pages are supposed to be auto-translated, but for simplified Chinese at least, joseki explanations are currently not being auto-translated. I tried to change my language settings to another non-English language, and the OJE joseki explanations are correctly translated as expected. So I suspect this is a simplified Chinese-specific issue.
As Chinese go terms are often pronounced very differently to their corresponding Japanese go terms, Chinese speakers, even with basic English skills, are generally not able to understand Japanese-loan terms in English easily without specifically rote-learning them beforehand. So it would be quite helpful to provide some kind of Chinese translations for those joseki explanations.
Is there a setting that allows user to turn on the translations for these OJE joseki explanations?
I haven’t seen any discussion in the forum about Chinese translations since I started to read it some years ago.
Automatic translation could be very bad for weiqi terms as they are very specific to the game. I doubt it to be very useful or convenient unless some human with knowledge about weiqi terms in English and Chinese and Japanese comes and works on it.
I tried putting some of these joseki explanations into Google Translate. Most of the translations it gave me are quite good. But there are also some that are laughably bad.
It might be a good idea to auto translate them first and then have some human proofreading/editing/approving the translations. I would be happy to do some of the proofreading.
Since I tried long time ago, I did some experiments again.
If more as only one word, Google understand the specific go terms coming from Japanese quite well proposing interesting translations . I was really surprised and that may be a positive improvement due to AI.
But the next step to translate this into Chinese seems not working at all (with words like joseki, tesuji, Atari, ponnuki etc…).
Besides there are concepts which are not always shared by all cultures. Like haengma which is more a Korean concept. Or for example tsuke which is “contact” move is splitted in 4 different ones in Chinese. That may create some difficulties in an automatic translation.
There are some documents to help (Sensei pages and a Korean book mostly). I have no expertise at all on the translation process and tools here on OGS so I dunno how these kind of specialized dictionaries could be integrated. It’s not really a lot of data in itself, something under 500 hanzi is my guess.
It tuns out that a bunch of locations in OGS that used to be sent to an AI for translation stopped working some time back (when the AI we were using changed the way it wanted to be talked to).
They all just fell back to “English only” without making a fuss.
Joseki Descriptions and Chat are the two most noticeable - most of the others related to “Reports”.
Hopefully we’ll get a fix in for this soon - it won’t be immediate because we have a bit of a backlog of updates at the moment.
