OGS playing & watching support added to Stone.gs

Stone.gs is a new web site that features realistic physics, dynamic sounds, and 3d rendered boards, stones, and environments. My goal is to provide the best browser-based go playing & watching experience possible in 2026.

I’ve recently added cross play with OGS, so you can now watch and play beautifully rendered live matches in your web browser!

Watch or play on OGS

For general information about Stone.gs, see the about page.

To set expectations, the site does have higher hardware requirements than online-go.com itself. It at least requires hardware acceleration to be turned on in the browser, and it won’t run great on old laptops with integrated graphics. It should work ok on most newer computers and cell phones, and works really well if you’ve got an actual graphics card in your PC

Some notes on the integration:

  • You can use OGS to sign up for or sign in to your Stone.gs account.
  • Auto match from Stone.gs also matches against OGS custom games with compatible settings.
  • I couldn’t use avatars from OGS because they break the site’s aesthetic too much. OGS users get a random Stone.gs avatar assigned unless they pick a different one.
  • I implemented a feature to synchronize your Stone.gs avatar to OGS, if you want to use the same one in both places.

I wanted to give thanks and a shout out to OGS for being so open and making it easy to integrate. If any OGS admins want to reach out to discuss the integration you’re more than welcome to contact me through OGS or email.

Thanks for taking a look!

Soothing on the eyes.

I’ve been wanting this type of functionality for the last five years…

Just putting in some extra screenshots since the original post only allowed one.

This seems like a shame - are you sure you can’t “do somefink” to make it possible?

I can imagine various ways, including setting the OGS avatar on a background like the stoneGS ones, kind of as a “badge insert”.

There’s a lot of “identity and recognition” tied up on long-standing OGS avatars…

I might be exta stupid, but how to achive those looks? I mean, at best I`m getting just view of the board, not table, couldnt rlly find how to//

If you’re on a computer, you can use your mouse. The scroll wheel will zoom you in & out, and you can drag in the area outside the board to rotate and pan the camera (try dragging with left and right buttons).

On mobile, the easiest way is to first spread your fingers to get zoomed out, and then you can just use your finger from there.

When I was sampling games, I was seeing that over 90% of players are using the default bitmoji avatars. These are the main ones I want to avoid, since they don’t look good and they are unlikely to mean anything to the user.

I agree that for avatars the user went out of their way to set that it would be worth retaining them. I’ll put it on my list

That looks really nice! I’m bit scared of inputting my ogs signins into 3rd party app, but i’'ll definitely try it out on another account ^^
