You should only chat with people who are online. (You see that when starting a chat from your friend list.)
The personal chat is not guaranteed to be preserved when sending messages to people who are offline.
What if that person goes offline and he/she doesnt say good bye and you keep writing to that person? then the dot would be good
the private messaging system is getting better in the future. Developers have said that they will make it better. It’s just not too high on the priority list as the current system is working ok.
