Opinion Poll: Plan to Abolish Myongji University's Dep. of Go Studies

I assure you that I’m not going to meditate on this even if you bring it back again and again.

I wasn’t aware that this was even somethig that is in question. It goes without saying that NOTHING is free.
Even OGS isn’t free. Just because I haven’t paid for it with time nor money (other than providing a sizable percentage of the community translation for the Greek version), I understand that some other people do give time and/or money for it.

Even my project isn’t free (behind the scenes the translators involved have worked thousands of unpaid hours collectively), but it produces a “free product”.

The concept of providing “free” education, “free” healthcare, “free” Go servers or “free” Go books was never that they somehow appear our of thin air. I do not think that anyone here believes in magic or fairies. Of course all that time and money that are needed for those things are being paid, somehow, behind the scenes. What is important is:
a) Is that time and money worth it?
b) Are people enjoying a useful service that they would otherwise wouldn’t have access to?

And for education, healthcare, infrastructure, sanitation, OGS, books and a lot of other things that we enjoy within our societies, the answer to both those questions is: Yes.

I think it’s people who think, such as for example you, who find it self-evident that TANSTAAFL, but so often only the benefits and not the costs of a proposed policy get promoted, that I am on the side of anyone who wants to keep it in the forefront of people’s mind that while the benefit may be worth the cost, let us never forget that there is a cost
