Opponent Rank doesn't work correctly

Adjusting quickly… Maybe. But also, this is not Tygem. And consider the following:

  • Winning one game gives an almost negligible boost to each of my opponents, and I agree is statistically meaningless.
  • But from my point of view - in that tournament I played 9 games, 2 were annulled, but I have 7 registered losses. 7 losses is a lot. If the system adjusts quickly as you suggested, then it might have lowered my rank quite a bit.

It also depends how many rated games one plays, and in general, I do not play rated that often.

I think we can safely assume the rating system isn’t perfect and neither are the collection of results that have been logged.

Some games a person might’ve cheated the score to win and it was never reported.

Someone might’ve won a bunch of sandbagging games, was never reported and stopped playing.

Someone might’ve thrown countless games to sandbag and didn’t get reported.

Then there’s just “wrong” results but the players agreed to them, whether it’s by not seeing the issue or just agreeing to an “incorrect” score that makes sense to both of them at their level.

I don’t think one can remedy all the possibly incorrectly scored games, and one just has to treat the data as it is.

I mean we do still try to resolve things when we’re aware of them, but there are limitations to annulling games far enough back, whereby it’s more just cosmetically annulling them, rather than having an effect on ranking.

This is one of major point of the OGS rating system compared with others on internet. A few even think sometimes it’s too volatile.

[10:46]里没那猫: Hi, I requested a daily correspondence game and set the opponent rank to 0 to +5, and yet I was immediately matched with an opponent 2 ranks below me (I’m 13k, they’re 15k). Did I do something wrong?

I see the opponent ranks are, say, 5k to 7k now, not -1 to +1 anymore.

Yes, as per the image shared above, for the reasons in this thread.

LOL I thought this was “the other thread”. But, yes :slight_smile: And the bug is hopefully fixed.

There’s still a bug, I set 6k to 7k, but I match an 8k.

:crying_cat:

Dang, we’ll we surely must be gradually getting rid of them, because we certainly fixed something :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Another problem that bothers me is I select byoyomi, but the game is matched with Fisch.

Are you using the “Flexible time settings” option?

Setting to “Exact” should help

I see your point, I should select exact instead of flexible

Yes, the exact works, but the multiple is forced to be flexible, the better way, is (1) flexible or exact (2) single of multiple.

The opponent rank is almost resolved, but still one loophole: unranked opponent can be matched, and unranked player can be 18+k and that’s nonsence, thanks again.

Hello,

Could you please link the game?

In the dino1019 profile, the newest unranked game is from 2022.

Seems fine to me, there’s lots of recent games.

Maybe you have a filter on?

Game history might be unreliable at the moment because of:

@shinuito

Ok, as I said “unranked games” so I simply misread the post, my bad.

@dino1019

To answer the OP;

Yes it’s OGS policy to integrate players arriving in the rating system, starting from their declared level. That’s how it works.

This happened 2 times in 100 games, is that so annoying?

“ unranked player can be 18+k “

I haven’t found any rating of these 2 players but I understand that this is your guess. Anyway there is no optimal solution for this, everyone should have a way to get a rating, as you did get one when starting to play on OGS. Obviously they tried too hard.
