Opponent Rank doesn't work correctly

Adjusting quickly… Maybe. But also, this is not Tygem. And consider the following:

  • Winning one game gives an almost negligible boost to each of my opponents, and I agree is statistically meaningless.
  • But from my point of view - in that tournament I played 9 games, 2 were annulled, but I have 7 registered losses. 7 losses is a lot. If the system adjusts quickly as you suggested, then it might have lowered my rank quite a bit.

It also depends how many rated games one plays, and in general, I do not play rated that often.

I think we can safely assume the rating system isn’t perfect and neither are the collection of results that have been logged.

Some games a person might’ve cheated the score to win and it was never reported.

Someone might’ve won a bunch of sandbagging games, was never reported and stopped playing.

Someone might’ve thrown countless games to sandbag and didn’t get reported.

Then there’s just “wrong” results but the players agreed to them, whether it’s by not seeing the issue or just agreeing to an “incorrect” score that makes sense to both of them at their level.

I don’t think one can remedy all the possibly incorrectly scored games, and one just has to treat the data as it is.

I mean we do still try to resolve things when we’re aware of them, but there are limitations to annulling games far enough back, whereby it’s more just cosmetically annulling them, rather than having an effect on ranking.

This is one of major point of the OGS rating system compared with others on internet. A few even think sometimes it’s too volatile.

[10:46]里没那猫: Hi, I requested a daily correspondence game and set the opponent rank to 0 to +5, and yet I was immediately matched with an opponent 2 ranks below me (I’m 13k, they’re 15k). Did I do something wrong?
