Opponent Rank doesn't work correctly

I configure “opponent rank” as 0 to +2 when “Play Human”, but game is matched with even -2, which is not in the range. This is a bug, please fix it, thanks.

We could do with a bit more help.

Can you (or some keen test person) take a screenshot of the challenge setting dialog, then a screenshot of the game when it commences, to make sure we’e clear what’s going on.

See screenshots 1 and 2, my rank is 6k, and I want to play with an opponent who is equal or 1 or 2 level higher than me, then I match a 7k, who is 1 level lower than me.

Perfect, thanks: very clear.

I’m 6k, chose equal or stronger opponents only

but, I was paired with 9 kyu

[17:53]Water Dragon: There seems to be a ranking bug. Trying to get games have settings at 0 and 3. So 0 weaker and 3 stronger. I’ve gotten 9 kyus twice. Listed at the moment at 7 kyu.

Hope this bug can be fixed by end of Sep. 2025.

That’s a nice goal. Any particular reason for it?

This bug is quite bothering, most games are not matched with desired ranks.

Yes, it’s a bug we definitely “should not have”.

On the development side, we’ve been buried in some complex under the hood issues (like “being able to continue accepting payments” and “AI cheating detection”).

Hopefully we’ll have a moment to lift our eyes out of those and deal with this thing soon.

Do you happen to know if it is just totally “reversed”, or is it more like “sometimes it’s just not obeyed”?

Ah, it seems to replace the sign with both positve and negative signs, e.g., up to +2 becomes up to +2 and -2.

I think there is more to it than that. Here:

… I got matched 5 ranks up, even though I also prefer playing with +1 / -1.

Could it have to do with the site registering different ranks for different board sizes, and different time settings?

From personal experience: I was surprised to get no handicap paired to an opponent whose “rank next to the username” looked 4 stones weaker than me, but then I remembered that in correspondence I organised an ill fated tournament where I withdrew losing a bunch of games 4 years ago. Unfortunately were all ranked games. (by the way, admins: could those results be annulled?)

It “could” but it “should not”.

It might be that users are confused, and think that the applicable rank is a different one than is actually being used.

Only one rank is supposed to be used: the overall overall rank.

It’s complicated to look at, because the system tries hard to make a match, I’m not exactly clear on the rules it has for that.

Already think I can see that the +/- thing dino reported might have been there “forever”

But this would not explain genbeart’s observation. It would be interesting to know if getting matched 5 ranks up only happened after a wait.

It would be unfair to annul a bunch of games you lost years ago, as these gave you afterwards easier games as you should have get with the annulation.

I don’t recall waiting longer than usual - 1 or 2 days at most.

Is that like “will this be fixed by September”? :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Or is it more like “I only request correspondence games, so the wait-time is not so relevant”. But also (interestingly) the wait-time for correspondence games is almost always high… I wonder how that factors in :face_with_monocle:

unfair to whom? I haven’t played on OGS in 4 years, resumed with unrated games a couple months ago and as I noticed the “easier games” tried to get a couple of rated games , which are still ongoing, to try to rebalance my rank. As this thread came up I thought it relevant to mention it publicly/to the admins. And if my two ongoing rated games have to be annulled that would affect only my two current opponents.

Well, you are performing 3 Ranks better in this game than the numbers at the ranks of you two would suggest. So the system paired you magically rather good.

Not a good example for your point.

I don’t understand. ongoing? You were asking to annul a bunch of games from 4 years ago.

Anyway if we speak about those old games it’s not just your 2 opponents, it’s all the games played meanwhile with all the opponents and the opponents of the opponents etc…

Now in 4 years you may have not played but your opponents did with a suspected overrating, I mean you want the whole OGS rating be recalculated?

Best in my opinion is to consider that the rating system is quite responsive, adjusting quickly and to consider those old losses as neglectible.
