bestil (Danish – order, reserve)

pestil

An old spelling of pestle that I found one citation of on Wikisource, from The Endeavour Journal of Sir Joseph Banks – Manners and customs of South Sea Islands, 1769

Bread fruit cookd in this manner becomes soft and something like a boild potatoe, tho not quite so farinaceous as a good one yet more so than the midling sort. Of this 2 or 3 dishes are made by beating it with a stone pestil till it make a paste, mixing water or Cocoa nut liquor with it and adding ripe plantains, bananas, sour paste etc.

Pesti (plural of “pesto” or “peste”)

cesti

In English and Latin, this is the plural of cestus, in its sense as a “boxing glove; a strip of leather, weighted with iron or lead, tied to a boxer’s hands”.

Oh, I’m wrong. In Latin, cestus is actually in the fourth declension – the plural is cestūs with a long u. But English apparently still uses -i.

There’s also the sense “girdle”, and that does take -i (second declension).
