And here is the only known example of a real ancient one (before its discovery, the Pythagoras cup was only known from written descriptions).

I have to share this. :smile:

For the record, I am that kind of male who “sits down to pee” and always thought to be some kind of weirdo since I was taught that males do it standing, but now I know I’m not alone! :smile:

I remembered this video recently and because it makes me laugh and feel better about ladder anxiety, I find it relaxing… but I must add a content warning of sorts for a lot of profanity, some violent smack talking, and also chess. It might not be to everyone’s taste

But I find the main gist to speak to me a lot: “I’m never going to be the best… But I like the game, and I can always learn more, and that is enough.”

Joey Comeau is maybe most famous from his web comic, A Softer World, but I’ve enjoyed all his writing for years

I remember finding this video very interesting.

It was produced by the Victoria and Albert Museum, a large and old fashion museum in London.

On a very different note, I saw this last night:

It’s about the first scientific observation of serious and long-term tribal disintegration and conflict in chimpanzees, in the group studied by Jane Goodall in Tanzania.

I would so like to see that pic (no YouTube :sob:)

Goodall was a scientific “hero” of my youth due to my reading of the National Geographic article about her work in, I think, 1963. I highly recommend her magnificent summary of her work in The Chimpanzees of Gombe (1986), which also has a huge amount of information on the whole history of the study of apes…

This channel is about training magpies to find bottlecaps and exchange them for food from a machine.

green = territorial gain
red = territorial loss

This is a fast video, imo best played at 0.75 or even 0.5 speed.

The same channel, Cottereau, produced this hit video in 2018:

Not very thought-provoking but pretty funny.

In somewhat of a callback, a photo of Jane Goodall is on the Voyager disc.

I really enjoyed this video. The children interviewed have very realistic concerns – overpopulation, unemployment, and nuclear war – and are extremely eloquent.

This is thought provoking in a way:

I wonder how many people caught the word play with the cunninglinguist :innocent:

I have had a ton of fun with this hobby, and I seriously encourage you all to consider reefing or even freshwater aquariums if you aren’t already and have the money (reefing can get a little pricey, although I am probably among the cheapest out there.

Here is an extremely detailed playlist that looks much more in-depth than most beginners need to start with, but the nice thing about the hobby is that there are a lot of things to play around with and quite a bit of equipment you don’t necessarily need.

Have you seen

  1. The tiny aquatic biospheres on Life in Jars?

  2. The Selva de Fuego jungle river paludarium on Ants Canada?

I am familiar with the aquatic biospheres because my brother had one for several years and I found it extremely interesting. I think our cat ended up breaking it eventually though. The Selva de Fuego jungle river paludarium was new to me though, and after briefly watching it, I thought that was quite interesting as well. Thanks for sharing!

Is the thread a place to share videos that are relaxing and thought-provoking at the same time, or a place to share videos that are relaxing and also videos that are thought-provoking …? :wink:

That’s the remake of 1984, with Richard Burton in his last movie. It is very faithful to the book, IIRC, but too unpleasant to watch more than once.
