Buonasera sono italiano. Mai giocato a Go. Sto facendo partite su partite. Mai vinto. Ho troppa fretta nel decidere la mossa. Come devo impostare le partite contro il computer per cercare di giocare senza stress? Grazie

Welcome! Set up a match against an easy bot (rank 25k), go to ā€œimpostazioini personalizzateā€ on the bottom of the screen, then in ā€œControllo tempo di giocoā€ set ā€œDal Vivoā€.

Then in ā€œIncrementoā€ set a high time, like 5 minutes. This mean every move gives you 5 minutes more. Some bots don’t allow certain time settings so you might have to try some different settings. Or even set ā€œControlle tempo di giocoā€ to ā€œCorrispondenzaā€, then you will have more than enough time.

The language around here is English, it’s okay to use machine translations.

Or, visit Learn to play

Unfortunately, OGS is not a good place for beginners to start playing against humans, because for the first couple of games you will get opponents who are way way way stronger than you are.

I even suggest to deliberately lose at least fifteen games but do it in a way so that nobody suspects you of losing deliberately. Easiest way to do this is to play random moves (not too close to the edge of the board), playing them very fast, until your position is obviously hopeless, and only then resign.

After having lost fifteen to twenty games, the server will start pairing you against other beginners at least in some of your games.

That’s the only way I’m aware of to minimize the ā€œmandatory frustration periodā€ for beginners on OGS.

You might also want to check out the thread below on that topic:

This seems like a pretty wild suggestion.

The user who started the thread from the post you linked was like 23k when they made their account, after 1 game they dropped to 25k. This is a user started at 5k yet after 3 games they were 25k. This is a user started at 17k and after 5 games they were 25k. Ranks under 25k are all just treated like 25k so it wouldn’t help them to go any lower.

I think recommending people lose 15-20 games is a wild suggestion. This will just waste their time and needlessly annoy their opponents. If it only takes a few games to drop down to 25k it’s probably best for new players to just play those games to the best of their ability.

I understand there might be things with the site that need improving, and there’s nothing wrong with having a discussion about suggested improvements, but I don’t think we should be advocating breaking the rules. I also don’t think it’s right to suggest ways to obfuscate the fact that one is breaking the rules.

I’m only playing against the computer, although I’m looking for human players, but I can’t find them. I’m trying to play, but I’m a really bad player. What will happen if I keep playing and losing?

There’s nothing wrong with losing, I was just pushing back on the other person’s suggestion that people should lose on purpose.

Your rank does look a bit high. When you signed up for your account did you see something like the image below?

What did you pick?

While I do know that this is the case, my brain is still somewhat in denial of that fact. I just can’t wrap my mind around it.

Thanks for reminding me that this is the real elephant in the room.

So the situation is actually worse than what I described. Even after losing 15 games (give or take) to get down to 60 kyu, the server will still (and on a regular basis) pair you with opponents that are way too strong for you.

It is super frustrating, but I’m afraid the bottom line is: Don’t play on OGS if you are new to the game of Go.

Where to play though? AFAIK most other popular Go servers either don’t go below 25k either, or don’t even go down to 25k.

Welcome, @auleia – have you played (!) through the interactive tutorial aka ā€œLearn to play Goā€?

In my experience it is a lot of fun, so much so that I – NOT being a beginner – enjoy playing through it, and what shall I say, at the higher levels of the Tutorial, even I learn some things!

STRONGLY recommended.

There’s a well-known Go proverb: ā€œLose Your First 50 Games As Quickly As Possibleā€:

… so don’t worry about that, you might well lose many games in the beginning, but much fewer games if you play through the tutorial
Plus, if you play peers, i.e. other newbies – or of you play stronger players on smaller boards like 9x9 with appropriate handicap – chances are good that you will even win a few games relatively early.

After you have played through the tutorial (did I mention that it is fun?) we can play a few games on 9x9 if you like (I’m currently 12k, back from 3k very shortly five years ago) … I will be generous with Handicap stones (I don’t mind losing against Handicap), but I only play slow correspondence games.

Significant potential for improvement then.

On chess.com the highest concentration of players is around 200 to 300 Elo points. These are people that don’t know much more than the rules of the game.

Thanks. So what do I have to do to play with you?

Haha, so you have played through the tutorial already?
Otherwise, TBH, it would be too stressful for me to explain the most basic basics, and the tutorial does that way better than I can do :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’ll probably read you in the early afternoon, and if your answer is YES, then I’ll send you a game invitation (aka ā€œchallengeā€, as it is called here, which I find a little aggressive, I prefer friendly games) and we can see how to proceed from there on :slightly_smiling_face:

Meanwhile you can, if you like, send me a ā€œfriendā€ request on the game server:

Never mind, I sent you a game invitation.

Dice partita iniziata, non capisco, non posso inserire pietra

It says game started, I don’t understand, I can’t insert stone

Those nine stones are YOURS, namely Handicap stones, and you had to wait for me (White) to play my first move.
