the two highlighted moves are 100% identical - any idea why there is a -49% variation on the played move?

You’re right. The moves should be identical. Because of this, I ran a full review, which gave a difference in win rate within 3pp. So the AI misread something with the reduced playouts.

I find it reassuring that the awesome power of AI has yet to grasp the simple concept of symmetry. Our biological hegemony seems assured for now.

Likewise, I ran a full-strength analysis on that one, and they end up within 0.2 of each other. It’s true the AI doesn’t see symmertry at first glance, but roll enough dice enough times and it evens out in the end…

Do all AI simply bludgeon their way through symmetry? How much stronger would AI be if they recognised symmetry (and equivalency)?
Nb. The Original Post is an obvious example of equivalency.
