Reduce total vacation time

Well, I’ve had some real hard times in the past when I wasn’t able to play, and where having accumulated quite some vacation time saved me from having to resign or just lose on time.

But maybe I’m misunderstanding something.

I think this would complicate things too much, especially in games with very different time settings. Slower timeout for a 12h game would still mean a person who wants to use 30 days of their vacation time will time out (even if I, as the opponent, don’t mind and agree for that person to put our game on hold for 30 days).

It’s easier to know that vacation on means “real” vacation from the games/ tournaments that allow it.

Sometimes I use vacation and I play in games/ tournaments that allow it. I don’t mind it always, I just want certain games/ tournaments to move at their intended pace.

I find it cleaner to get the game with the settings each player wants.

I think y’all got thread fatigue from philosophical questions and didn’t read the whole of my post and this thread. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Not the default, because for the main site tournaments and ladders there is no creator who can change from those defaults.

On turning on vacation flag, there should be a confirm phase listing all your current games and tournaments you are in (you could be in a tournament with no active games whose next round could start whilst you are on vacation) which have vacation disabled.

I agree this would be a good idea, however I would like the setting of “no vacation” on games/ tournaments sooner than when all optimal conditions are met…

These should get a grace period with a notification, but not something excessive. In the scale of hours, not days.

 Not much point in a notification if you are on vacation and not checking OGS. Scenario: I’m going on holiday for 3 weeks and won’t be checking OGS. 1 week into my holiday the next round of a 3d+1d<7d tournament starts. My games in that tournament should have my clock paused for 2 weeks per my vacation flag, a few hours or even days grace is pointless, as my vacation status is the thing that know how long I’ll be away from OGS.

If you join a no-vacation tournament, then you know that vacation is not allowed.
The grace period I suggest is because it’s not realistic for someone to always have their mind on that no-vacation tournament that will start any day now. It’s to help no-vacationers not miss their no-vacation round games, not for everyone.

Ah, I misunderstood: the grace was suggested only for no-vacation tournaments.

For the no-vacation setting to work, there must be proper notification too. I can agree to the no-vacation rule but I can’t be checking OGS daily on my vacation just for one tournament.

Email notifications are easily missed. Is there a way to make the notification work on a mobile? And maybe send multiple notifications especially when the time is running out?

That’s a nightmare because whoever sleeps first loses :joy:

I don’t want to state the obvious, but the no-vacation tournaments will probably only for people who are compulsively present on OGS (like me).

There’s plenty of tournaments for people who want to use their vacation as intended!

Wouldn’t it be fun tho :stuck_out_tongue:

Have you tried Surround on iOS? (Now that I know that Sente -online Go on android is no use to you!)

I’ve not used it obviously but I’m pretty sure it sends notifications. Sente does when it’s your move, scoring phase, new challenges, game ended and such.

OGS proper also supports some PWA notifications (though I’ve never been able to make them work consistently myself)

For tournaments, another option would be to kick players out of the tournament if they use vacation, but not deny the vacation. That way people can still make use of their vacation and finish their games, but won’t be able to delay the tournament.

That doesn’t probably help the op though, because for any individual game you would still potentially be stuck with a holidaymaker.

If vacationers get to play as it is now, and non-vacationers get to create their own tournaments, I think there won’t be need for such violence :stuck_out_tongue:

It would be nicest if the vacation just didn’t apply to “No-Vacation” tournaments, so they could keep playing so long as they didn’t time out

I curious to what extent there is a dichotomy. Like I’m definitely a non-vacationer. And we know there are vacationers who don’t mind delaying tournaments for months :rage:

But my assumption was that there is a large group of people who use vacation for like a week at a time, and don’t really hold up anything at all.

I realize this is going back to the OG proposal “Reduce total vacation time”, which I don’t have a huge problem with

I’m probably in there sometimes!

I used the catchy term, but I mean people who (will be) play(ing) in games/ tournaments that allow vacation and those who don’t.

Also, I have no problem people mingling

For example, someone is on vacation for a month for all their games and the accept my no-vacation super fast game to play for the long weekend because they got bored. I don’t mind, I’m not going to check what people are doing with their lives! As long as I have the option to play with no vacation pauses and their vacation doesn’t affect my fast game :woman_shrugging:t2:

This seems like good material for that empty cockpit space. Perhaps a listing of the relevant games / tournaments plus an indication of time left on the clock sorted to highlight the shortest clocks. And a display limit on the number of games.
