I think 60 days is too much.
Especially when I post a challenge of 12h +12h a move for example, I think it’s pretty obvious I’m interested in a fast game. Waiting 15 days for my opponent’s move when they were supposed to have 12 hours makes my preferred time settings irrelevant. And if they go on vacation after 10 moves or so, I can’t even cancel the game.
Even if for some reason we need to keep 60 days of vacation, I would like the option to post challenges that override vacation settings.
I want to play fast games; if I wanted to play one move every two weeks I would have posted a challenge with 2 weeks time per move.
There’s plenty of challenges, if someone wants to take their sweet time playing once every fortnight they should pick one of those and not waste mine.
Also going for tournaments, I’d like to have the option to put “no vacation” to the settings for the tournaments I create.
ETA: The system now is if someone goes on vacation and they have 30 tournaments that allow it and one that doesn’t, the player can’t go on vacation.
If the setting is tournament-specific it only applies to that tournament and player can go on vacation for all their other games/tournaments. I think that’s more fair for everyone.
Better solution (that’s been suggested before) is an option on games and tournaments “no vacation”: if user goes on vacation, doesn’t affect that game. But other expected-slow tournaments like correspondence title tournaments continue to respect the vacation flag. And then I read all your post
We could definitely use a few more settings in there like:
When I go on vacation these games pause/don’t pause:
*Tournaments
*Pause on weekends
*Private
*Unranked
*Ranked
*Ladder
*Analysis enabled
*Beyond move (_)
*Against Gia
*…
When I’m on vacation email me a reminder every day (on by default)
…
Probably can think of some others so that that settings screen doesn’t feel neglected.
It all depends on the tempo of the players and how responsive they are to email notifications. I’ve played several +4hr increment games. Perfectly manageable as one is expected to make many moves per day, gaining much more than 24 hours each day, which makes it sustainable. Usually, I put a max cap of at least a day or two, but 12 hrs seems feasible as well, provided that one only sleeps about 8 hrs per day.
I am supportive, though for legacy reasons OGS probably needs to keep it. Esp since it’s one of the paid benefits.
100% in support of this. And more importantly, I think this setting should be an option (and the default?) for tournaments since the impact multiplies by N participants.
Need to do with some care though. Can comment more on a GitHub issue when it exists, but if this feature gets added, it needs to be very clear to vacationers when vacation will not be respected.
I think the original post really makes two different suggestions:
Reduce the amount of vacation time available for everyone.
Add a “no vacation” option to custom games and tournament settings.
The second suggestion does not affect anyone that wants to avoid it. However, the first suggestion does affect everyone, and the title of the thread and initial part of the post gives the impression that this is what the thread is all about.
