Short disconnection causes loss of game

I often play on a train, and it frequently happens that I am disconnected due to poor mobile or Wi-Fi reception. This is usually fixed within a minute. Due to the seemingly new option to claim a victory when the opponent gets disconnected, I lose games, which is very annoying. I understand that people intentionally leaving games are annoying, but this here is equally annoying.

Greetings and welcome to the forum!

Yes, definitely annoying to lose a game due to faulty Internet connection. Having said this, it’s called OGS because it’s online. So if you’re not reliably online you’re going to have adverse consequences.

I thought you had to be disconnected for more than merely 1 minute to time out. But I could be mistaken.

Perhaps make sure to play games with longer time controls? Or do tsumego on the train and play games again once in range of a stable connection?

Do you tell them at the start of the game you are on a train so may briefly disconnect but will be back. Then if they are good sports ™ they won’t claim the win, but with no prior warning they are more likely to do so.

That said, I do also find it annoying that if I have 20 minutes on my clock I can sit with my game open for 20 minutes and not play (either because I’m thinking, or I went to answer the door, change a nappy etc) and not lose and my opponent has to wait for me to play because that’s the time settings, but close the tab / drop connection etc for just a minute and it’s game over (and mobile browsers effectively close the tab to save battery even if you think you left them open).

This is not due to short time settings but due to the disconnect feature. And I am on OGS for a long time. This used to be different (like 5 min).

Since you know the train route will drop your connection, you might try restricting yourself to correspondence format while commuting - and if you play a bot in correspondence mode, you’ll still get a quick response anyhow. Food for thought.

Maybe you can save some prewritten “hello” message like “Hi, nice to meet you. My connection is bit unstable, so i might disconnect briefly, but i’ll reconnect as soon as I can”?

You can edit those prewritten “hello” templates by clicking “edit”
