Hi there. New to the site. I want to change my Profile icon. What are the dimensions and specs allowed? Is it 128 x 128 pixels? What file types are allowed? PNG? JPEG? SVG? File size?
I checked out the site wiki first but there are no details.
Yeah I did the same….128 x 128 pixels PNG. However some sites allow other file formats and often even compress larger files.
I’m not sure about how the main site deals with profile images, and I don’t know of any documentation that we have on the topic. I would guess that some file formats may be converted, resized, and/or compressed. I would recommend just playing around with uploading various things and seeing what happens. You could even update the wiki with your findings.
I don’t think this is what you want, but I just wanted to note that the forums also have profile images that are based on a completely different system, i.e., via the forum software Discourse. The forums even allow for native SVG profile pictures, like mine. Despite it being served via a URL that lists PNG as the file extension (https://forums.online-go.com/user_avatar/forums.online-go.com/yebellz/96/37491_2.png), the file is actually an SVG.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Ok I did a test to see 2 things: 1. Does the website accept file types other than png? 2. Does the website compress and downsample pixel dimensions? (Most do)
What I have found so far:
I uploaded a jpeg. Handled just fine
I uploaded a 900 x 900 pixel file. No problem.
The file size uploaded was 349kb - fairly tiny!
I will have to do some tests when I have the time to arrive at some reasonable standards.
