starting week three of my journey into go

I had a look at a few of your games. If you want to make territory, consider to jump like this.

In the picture above, Black controls about 14 intersections. Whereas if you advance intersection by intersection

you control only 6 intersections.

Of course, if you jump, then eventually you’ll need to fill the holes, but only do that at the end of the game, not at the beginning or in the middle.

Well, then just do those interactive tutorials one after the other, not all at once

And PLEASE quit that nonsense about “snakes” and “square opening” or “diamond opening”. Seriously. Sounds like those people talking about “quantum something” without the slightest idea what “quantum” means.

Tear-jerking much?
You’d be surprised by how many “uneducated old” Dans there are.

A few hints that might help:

3-3 lives:

Meaning that with correct play, that stone cannot be killed, and will get at least half of that corner.

Given correct play, a stone on the 3rd line lives if the two intersections on the left of it and the two intersections on the right of it are not occupied by the opponent:

Given correct play, two stones on the 3rd line with two empty intersections between them also live:

trohde, I’ve read quite a few of your posts over the last couple of years and you seem like a smart guy to me.

For a few weeks, now, with all these smart Go players serially responding seriously, is that autism-coded, or are most of the responders in on it?

Based on your first two posts I gather that you think that newoldguy is trolling, and that anyone who takes him seriously must be autistic or in on a joke.

There’s a different option: we assume someone is here in good faith (ie not trolling).

Either way, quite an entrance to the forums. Welcome.

iam not trolling i really don’t what that is for sure i just an old guy trying to learn to play a new game to him that is really confused as to how to proceed to see the light so to speak on this game’s inner workings

I just assumed he was AI (as i do with most of you :face_savoring_food:)

NewOG. Don’t look for a system you can implement each game. It always depends on where your opponent does. It’s fluid, like a dance.
If you really need a game plan. This the best one I can think of after playing this game for two months

  1. Secure two corners
  2. Secure two sides
  3. Grab a much of the center as you can.
  4. Reduce their territory/expand your territory

If @NEWOLDGUY is searching for game plans, by analogy with chess openings, that are josekis but that is only about one corner. There is a catalog, like for chess opening, called OJE included on OGS.

It’s like we have 4 plans , one in each corner but the coordination between them is not so documented

What @Groin says.

BUT! Seriously, at 25k or 20k, DO NOT bother with Joseki, except perhaps for one or two (not more!) of the most basic ones. But honestly, that may be too overwhelming already!

Do we have an animation somewhere with one or two of the most common and basic Joseki?

This is also good advice: Corners, then sides, then center at Sensei's Library
“Corners, then sides, then center” has been mentioned a few times already, but this page on Sensei’s Library (i.e. “Teachers Library”) illustrates it well.

I agree but I simply follow the wish of OP. So he can see that there are ways a bit like in chess, but nothing as easy because already you have to “synchronize” 4 catalog when you need to follow only one in a chess game.

I don’t want to hide and not answer his wish. Let’s put it clearly, he can then admit that following a pattern is far from being obvious.

Yes. Let him chose whatever inspires him.

Would they be joseki on a 13x13 board (I’m quite ignorant of 13x13)? OP has almost 600 games under their belt, they’ve only finished fifteen 19x19 games. They’ve mostly played 9x9 and now they’ve been increasingly playing 13x13. Given how few games they’ve played on a full sized board, unless those one or two basic joseki would help on the mid sized board then even that should probably be ignored at the moment.

Yes, the same as on a 19x19 although popularity may differ.

Really? Haven’t seen joseki for 13x13 and 9x9

For example, my AI suggests that in a 9x9 board, black should always start at the middle star, and then white should play 1 space underneath it. Weird!

If you really want a chess analogy for go, I’d say go is more like Chess960.

As with Chess960, you can’t blindly play fixed book openings in go. Instead of that, players improvise by using their experience and adhering to general principles (which I won’t state here, because others have already done so repeatedly).

However, the penny doesn’t seem to drop for @NEWOLDGUY and I don’t have much hope that the well intended advice he’s been given will change that, due to the (mental) health issues they apparently suffer from.

When gaining understanding is more or less impossible for them, and losing streaks are too frustrating, perhaps they should limit themselves to playing only against random bots, to have a decent chance of enjoying some wins.

Did I ever say something about 9x9 ? Read again please we were talking about 13x13.

9x9 joseki are completely different from 13x13 and 19x19 joseki, they’re like Shogi joseki, what 19x19 Go calls fuseki. I also wouldn’t bother using AI to analyze 9x9 joseki, since the work has already been done with a specialized small-board net, and enormous numbers of playouts

Chill out, I am just making a comparison.

after this weekend of play think I’m starting to see my opponents’ moves before they happen a little better, not every time, but i do every once in a while, a trend that they are making, and then I can offer a counterstrike to it. Again it’s only once in a while that happens, but that’s better than as before, zero idea what they are doing - still my own play has only defensive moves after about move 15 - then what ever i was doing is out the window and iam only doing damage control but maybe next week things will improve and maybe i can get my second legitment win –maybe ???

You played not too bad against me. NEWOLDGUY vs. noob42

A few things I want you to consider:

  1. Tiger’s mouth. Its called that for a reason. Now, there’s legit moments in life-n-death where placing your stone there makes sense. But not here. How to develop this intuition? Do life-n-death tsumegos.

  2. Do you know about the Rule of Ko?

  3. I’ve gone through lot of your posts, why do you keep on building “snakes” (your word, I am not sure that’s even a thing, is it?) D6 did nothing for your cause. 9x9 is very less forgiving of bad moves. As per AI, this was game over.
