I first participated in a forum about 30 years ago. Maybe I am wrong but I don’t think that characters like ⣿ were possible to type.

Right. We used standard ascii. Often with the small 128 characters set.

I’ve used this username since circa 1989 when I was playing in a newfangled online text-based ā€œMUDā€ , and wanted to signal that I was new.

My profile pic is in fact me.

The username I’ve been using for some months now means ā€œBlackbeardā€ in Rhaeto-romance.
The profile pic on the forum is from a picture that our friend @bugcat shared a while ago. The one I use on OGS itself if a cross-over of the yin-yang and a bowling ball, the sacred symbol of Dudeism.

New year, new profile pic… I think I want to commission something better from an artist eventually but in the meantime, placeholder cropped from this on set picture from Red Beard:

Because older Toshiro Mifune looking concerned while smoking a cigarette gives me serious 2022 energy

I recently switched from my old username (le_4TC) to this one (antonTobi).

The old one has been my standard online handle since forever, and I still quite like it ā€œvisuallyā€ (although it does feel a bit childish to me now, since I came up with it when I was very young). However, on the rare occasion I wanted to tell someone my handle IRL or in voice chat, it could lead to some confusion.

So for a long time I’ve been trying to come up with a new one. It’s tricky because I’d gotten so used to the old one being ā€œmeā€, anything else I considered didn’t feel right.

Looking at some youtube and twitch channels I follow, there are many that just use their real name, which seems like a pretty solid choice. However, my last name is spelt in an unusual way - one time when my family checked into a hotel we found that they had got the name wrong in four distinct places. So probably not a good choice if I want to make my handle easy to remember.

I’ve always liked my middle name, ā€œTobiasā€, although I’ve never used it (except as the T in le_4TC ).

And then I had the idea that if I just take the first four letters I get ā€œTobiā€, a lovely go term

Just Tobi by itself is a bit short unfortunately, and surely taken in most places. So I stuck it behind my first name. I also decided to use camelCase to show where the second name begins - I don’t see a lot of camelcase usernames, so it makes it feel a little more unique.

And while I’m at it, my (not so new) profile picture is based on this Appolonian Gasket:

Since all avatars here are cropped to be circular, I wanted to make one specifically for that format.
The coloring is meant to be go-themed, with a black and white stone on wood-ish background.

Those colors didn’t look as good on the main site, so I made a transparent variant:

My nickname is a demonstration of the fact that I don’t have much imagination.
I wanted to register as ā€œSofiaā€ on KGS but at that time it was already taken, so I added the first letter of my surname. I don’t remember why I chose to put it in lower case. Fun fact: I still don’t know how to pronounce it.
On OGS I used the same nickname until I found out that you could also enter special characters. For a while I was ✿Sofiam. I don’t remember exactly why, I probably found the flower pretty. Then I switched to dolphins. I like swimming and butterfly (that in italian is called ā€œdelfinoā€, dolphin in English) is my favourite stroke. I’m not going to change it again, considering that emojis in nicknames aren’t allowed anymore and have become rare.

For a long time I used this avatar, I liked it because it represents a girl playing go (a bit like the one I have here now).
Now I have a pink killer rabbit: I’ve been told it looks like me when I play go and I approve it XD

People who know me IRL can easily guess who I am from my username.

I chose my avatar because John Fairbairn repeatedly complains on the L19 forum about Mickey Mouse time limits in professional competitions, for instance here: commented shusaku game. • Life In 19x19

Short time controls may be objectionable for professional matches, but they agree well with amateurs like me who don’t take things too seriously. On the other hand, Mickey Mouse is a smart character so if he played go, I imagine he could reach amateur dan level.

My avatar is a drawing / portrait of me made by one of the twin daughters of my best friends, about 8 years ago. It suits me well on the web. My name refers to Issa Kobayashi, a Japanese poet whose work I appreciate very much. The T. stands for the place I live, sometimes changed for 013, the area code for landlines.

I started with the letters ā€œGā€ and ā€œoā€ and just kept going until I had something cute-sounding.

An interesting phenomenon I’ve noticed since joining Zoom calls at the beginning of the pandemic is that men ages 40+ tend to react to my name with something along the lines of ā€œthat’s…… weird. How did you come up with that o.Oā€ And everybody else tends to react with ā€œoh that’s super cute!ā€

Don’t ask me why :joy:

And no, I was not aware of Gwyneth Paltrow’s bizarre candle company until after it was pointed out to me. On-stream. Fun times

My profile picture is a picture of me because they can’t doxx me if I doxx myself first :zipper_mouth_face:

Unfortunately goop is a whole brand.

Please become super successful so you can eclipse her Google search results.

Thank you.

I didn’t find ā€œGoopletā€ weird, however it is intriguing since it sounds like a real word but isn’t one, so I was wondering if there was some hidden meaning.

Probably because ā€œ-pletā€ sounds cute and french-ish and ā€œgoopā€ sounds gooey and blobby and a little weird… And I guess different people are drawn more strongly to one of those than the other? :man_shrugging:

French eh? Should I be pronouncing it [guple]?

Please don’t take pronunciation advice from the Wrong Anglo-Saxon

I think I was more thinking like -ette from baguette
