I’m unable to play any games against bots. My move is shown on the board, and “Submitting…” appears on the screen, but the move is apparently never actually submitted, and so I lose every game on a time out without ever being able to actually make a move.
Can you let us know:
- Device, operating system browser
Is the red “connection problem” symbol displaying in the top right?
Can we have a screenshot with the browser console open?
(Dang, “we” should put instructions for that in the wiki
Anyone?
)
Device is an M4 Ipad Pro, with the site in the Safari browser. The red connection problem indicator is not on. Perhaps I don’t understand properly how to submit a move. Once the move appears on the board (with the sound effect), it should be automatically submitted right? Or is there a further step?
I will take a screenshot.
Ah - does this mean you have not in fact played any moves. You’re not reporting that you can’t play bots, you’re reporting that you can’t play at all?
If it says “Submitting”, then you’ve done what you were supposed to do.
I wanted to start with playing bots, and I have never managed to get one to register my first move. I haven’t tried playing human players yet. I wanted to get a sense of my rating first, by playing the bots.
Hmm - are you not “aspiring” at OGS then?
The account called “aspiring” has previously succeeded playing bots ![]()
If by any chance you can open the browser console and include that in the screenshot it may help a lot. I’m not sure how to do that on an iPad in Safari myself though.
Edit: oh, I see in the screenshot you are aspiring, and this is a recent problem for you.
![]()
Were the other games you played on the same device?
The top left of your profile pic should have the green dot lit up. That might mean a connection issue
I should have stated more specifically that I haven’t been able to play bots recently. I was able to sometimes several months ago, but often had the same problem. I thought that OGS had changed significantly changed its server software since then (perhaps I’m mistaken), so I thought maybe I needed to take some further step when making a move.
No green dot has ever been lit up for me, so that must be it, a connection issue. But it only seems to affect OGS, since I’m not having difficulty with other sites.
^^
Great thought!
If you’re in or near the UK, and and maybe using BT, then they have an issue that messes up OGS and sites like it - a particular technical thing.
That was it! My moves are being submitted now. Thanks for pointing out this setting, it was set to Cloudflare. Not something I chose, perhaps it’s a default.
Isn’t it possible to install an automatic detector (I dunno, with IP maybe?, I’m no expert) so that the players in UK get the relevant setting on by default?
I mean it’s a reccuring problem which takes some posts each time to identify and solve.
It’s not possible.
previous answer
I imagine it might be possible.
Sounds like a great task for someone who knows about that sort of thing…
… I thought I might try declaring it impossible to see if someone would contradict me and tell us how ![]()
It’s an easy enough Google search, but I imagine @anoek is already “someone who knows about that sort of thing” (see also PSA: UK users will soon be unable to access the forums or chat)
Ok I’ve rolled out an update to have everyone in the UK go through the Google Premium Network instead of Cloudflare by default.
However this isn’t something I can simply test myself, so I’d love for some folks in the UK, especially those that have had this problem and have had to work around the issue, to do the following:
- Set the WebSocket network to “Automatic”

- See if everything still works. If you’re feeling ambitious you can open up the JavaScript console and look for a line that looks like this:
![]()
That would confirm that the autodetection mechanism has worked correctly and you’re going through Google. The default for everyone else will be cloudflare, which looks like this:
![]()
So if you see that I’ve got work to do because it’s not working correctly.
Hopefully with this fix it will generally solve the problem without people having to fiddle with that setting.
Thanks in advance for anyone in the UK willing to test that out!
