Thue-Morse (Fair Sharing) Sequence: A possible alternative to komi?

Whoops, fixed! Sorry to everyone else for getting kind of off-topic… :slightly_smiling_face:

The main reason I’m not to bothered by this, is that I would never read that far ahead :stuck_out_tongue:

I use the knowledge to give myself a feel for who will have the better upcoming sequencing, not necessarily reading out variations 16 moves ahead.

I would like to propose another rule that regulates sealed moves:
If player A wants to interrupt the game, they will tell player B to seal their next move. When B sealed their move and paused the game, both players agree on when to resume.

What is the advantage of this compared to the current way?

I cannot estimate beforehand whether I can play undisturbed for three hours straight. That’s why I prefer correspondence time settings, but with sealed moves this problem could be eliminated as well, if you don’t have to commit for three hours straight.

I agree with Assai, it would be nice if the sealed move can be decided upon on the spot.

The downside of this is that you and your opponent don’t know how long the first half will take, which makes it much more stressful to plan. The 3 hours is designed to give about half or a little more of the game on the first day. With the other option, you both have to be prepared for the opponent to suspend the game earlier and leave you with a far longer second day, which you may be unable to block out time for.

I didn’t notice a game is supposed to last only two days in this tourney. In this case I won’t be able to participate. I’m sorry I didn’t say before that I didn’t have that much time at once.
I hope you enjoy the tournament.

Yeah, they need to be done reasonably quickly in order to keep up with the weekly schedule.

Why not let the players figure it out themselves in how many sessions they wish to play, as long as the game is finished within a week? I must say that I would prefer several sittings of 30m~1h above a single 3h+ session as well. 30m+1m Fischer means that a session could easily take 5 hours (as I also know from experience when I played with Samraku).

Moreover, it is a round robin, so the next round of games does not necessarily have to wait for the previous games to be concluded either.

I’ll add an allowance for that iff both players agree during scheduling when I get home and can type on my computer instead of my phone. I find it a bit weird that there was a month or so of consistent voting for long time controls, and now there’s pushback to make those time controls not seem so long.

The time control is fine, it’s the (lack of) possible breaks in between that are problematic

I do like the idea of having a break; I’ve been thinking of having an orthogo tourney with similar rules and breaks; but more than two sessions feels a bit out of hand, though I guess there’s historical precedent for multiple breaks, so /shrug.

Either way, I’ll add the option when I get home.

EDIT: I’ll add it when I get home from work today; yesterday was a bit crazy.

I’ll join, if it isn’t too late.

Not at all! Doesn’t start until this Sunday.

EDIT: I’ve added you to the list of participants.

I have edited the rules to allow pre-game negotiation of more sessions. I have also made multiple sessions the default as it seems everyone wants to play that way, though a single session is still an option.

I expect this to happen, which is why I put in the clause about not penalizing players for late games unless they failed to attempt in good faith to schedule their games, or they are unduly holding up the tourney. I assumed that games being scheduled in the week after they “should” be was an implication of that provision, but maybe I should make it explicit that that’s allowed? On the other hand, I don’t want to imply that it’s acceptable to do this without at least attempting to schedule your games on time.

The Tourney has begun: challonge.com/gvb8wmtf!

I added the requirement to give me links via pm or this thread to the games, so that they can be added to a list of games.

I used the built in Challonge bracket seeder to (I hope) more or less randomize the order, but it’s TMG, so color shouldn’t matter too much.

Also feel free to schedule your matches for future rounds early if you wish, or go a day or two over, no worries. Using both weekend days will likely make scheduling much easier for some people. Personally I’ll be accepting proposals from other participants to play our match early if I can, but I’ll go with the weekly flow otherwise.
