Upcoming changes to the Play page and general time settings

I still feel that something like this is enough. One button for the last used setting and one button for Custom. Maybe the custom can have two layers: a few preset settings and really custom settings

I mean it sounds good if you never change your settings, otherwise it sounds like a hassle to hide most of the settings and interface.

Not to mention it’s one more thing you have to figure out as a new user to the site.

I think there is such a thing as too minimal to be more confusing and make the UI worse.

I still would like the time controls visible as I believe not many people want to click a button to start a game where they have no idea what the time setting is. Then they certainly don’t want to click every button to know what all of them do.

So I lean much more toward the new layout on beta.

In fact there is one button for the last used setting

You just don’t change any of the settings from last time and click play

This means “no automatch”. That’s an entirely different discussion than the page design.

I think something like this would be my proposal:

  • I agree the Custom vs Quick Match option needs to be more visible.
  • I also moved computer play to a dedicated page (the whole point here was to get more humans playing on common settings)
  • The idea here is to minimize the number of necessary-feeling choices for the user to 2: board size and timing (and does so in fewer buttons than the grid)
  • The board image is just decoration, but I like it to break up the text. You could eliminate it on mobile, to fit all the options without scrolling.
  • All the other quick-match compatible options (Byo-Yomi preference / flexibility, handicaps, relative rank range) get pushed into “Preferences”. It’s a 1-click punishment for having strong opinions.

Nice.
I would swap custom and quick and align the settings with the title “quick match” (or move the board on the right)

Agreed this is nice

Yeah I would say most corr players use either custom games, ladders, or tournaments, since none of them require both players to be online at game start like quick match does.

Correspondence by nature seems antithetical to “quick match”

I also agree to the recent proposal to move computer play off the quick match page to its own screen to make obvious that human play is preferred.

It’s preferred maybe to people that play the game, but people just trying the game for the first time, bots are probably still preferred by a lot of people.

You give up and start again whenever you want to, you play slow fast, the bot doesn’t really care.

Even more reason to make it super obvious how to start one :slightly_smiling_face:

Yep, bots are like junk food, but less tasty.

Agreed it’s not currently common. I’m not opposed to having having an easy one-click way to start up corr games (moreover I’d want to ensure people know corr is an option without hunting for it), but I think this points out the expected experience for corr is very different than for live games. Namely, it shouldn’t block the UI (i.e. should be able to simultaneously quick-match for live and corr, and match for corr when offline), and it’s also very common for people to spawn a bunch of new corr games requests all at once, so a max of 1 quick-match corr request wouldn’t be enough.

I see forever “Loading…” in front of board image, refresh and change of size doesn’t help

Overall, I like the new layout. Much simpler.

Thanks for making the change - now I can automatch instead of using custom game! Appreciate the work here :heart_hands:

This change has made it much more tedious to start a game on mobile… Have to click play then scroll down twice to get to the real play button. I almost never tweak any of the other settings so it was really confusing to have to pick or confirm which time clock I wanted. 8 started the wrong type of game a few times this morning. now there’s just all these settings I don’t use between me and the play button.

Here’s what the screen looks like, play button is two scrolls down.

Since most people would pick the settings once and then tend to keep them, maybe we could move the play button up top between quick match and board size  even just for mobile only perhaps…

I think this is a great idea.

Yeah, mobile is especially bad due to things being spread out so much. Look, anyone with even a little bit of Go experience doesn’t need to be constantly reminded what 9x9 boards vs 19x19 boards look like. Yet it’s taking up a ton of screen real estate, to the detriment of actual usability. You can hide this information. Maybe put it inside a ? circle or something. That way if someone is confused they can find out more, but for the vast majority of us it’s not cluttering up the interface.

Also, can we get a relative rank setting? Like, instead of specifying 7k min, 3k max, you could specify -2 min, +2 max. That way it scales up/down automatically with your ranking. I pretty much always use this spread, btw, of +/-2 relative to my current rank when seeking games.
